Accessing PMS on MacMini from LGTV

Server Version#:1.19.5.3112-b23ab3896
Player Version#: 1.15.0.1354-d31489f0
HD: WD Easystore 10TB formatted for Apple

I would appreciate any help available. I have Plex running on my Mac desktop, with a 10tb external hard drive for media. My LGTV is hardwired into the network, along with my Mac. I am using the Plex app on the LGTV to attempt to play movies.

My problem is that I haven’t figured out how to turn both Plex and PMS on at the same time so that the LGTV can access the movies. Very often the Plex on the LGTV doesn’t see the server, but does show Plex channels, etc. When it does choose to cooperate, the server files will be under the MORE menu and not on the main menu.

It often says the server can’t be found. If I restart the Plex app on my Mac and the PMS, it still doesn’t show them on the LGTV. If I reboot the Mac, there is a 50/50 chance it may access the PMS properly.

I don’t understand:

  • how to trigger the restart and get the server to be found by the LGTV
  • how to start both the app and PMS at the same time (proper order?)
  • why the server becomes unavailable
  • other stuff I haven’t thought about.

I may be off base on my understanding of how these components work together. I’ve read all the forum postings that seem appropriate. I just reinstalled both Plex and PMS and my system, so the default settings are being used.

I have been using Plex for years with these issues. But now I want to fix them.

Your help is appreciated.

Really? No ideas?

Sounds a bit like your network is causing some hiccups… do you have some kind of firewall that might interfere with Plex player/server discovering each other?
As long as your tv with Plex is running on the same subnet you should be good.

Here’s a description of how to customize the plex app on your tv (e.g. how to pin libraries to the main menu).

Thanks, Tom.

It turned out to be my VPN made it impossible to connect. When I turned it off, all went well.

Maybe it’s time to look at a VPN that offers Split tunneling by application and supports 3rd party DNS.
