Accessing the same server on different computers

Hello,

I’m new to Plex so please bear with my very minimal knowledge in this.

I installed the Plex Media Server app on a MacBook, scanned and added my media library that’s on an external hard disk drive.

I got a new MacBook recently and I want to access the same media files from the Plex Media Server app. I installed the app on the new MacBook, but it’s not allowing me to access the files from the external hard drive (which is now connected to this new MacBook.)

What do I do to fix this?

Unless you have a very good reason (and once you get more familiar with Plex), you should start off with just ONE server.

You can access that ONE server from more than one by device by installing/using a Plex app/client that will then access that same (ONE) server.

So on your new MacBook, remove the (SECOND) Plex Media Server, and THEN either use the web browser to access the ONE (original) server at https://app.plex.tv/desktop OR (better) install either the Plex app for desktop or the Plex Media Player (and sign in using your Plex account).

Thanks, but that didn’t answer my question. What you explained here is exactly what I’m trying to do.

After I installed the Plex Media Server app on my new MacBook and signed in, my old files are displayed as “unavailable.” The external hard drive with those files is plugged in to the computer and is working alright. How do I reconnect to this so that my media files show up in my library?

Do you still have both Plex Media Servers installed?

I removed the server that was created when I signed up from the new MacBook.
