Actually deleting a Movie

So I have The Return of the King on my server as a two part movie (two files named - pt1 and - pt2) that Plex ‘combines’ into one. But after I pushed the movie to the server I realized that I didn’t transcode whole of part one, so I was missing a section of the movie. I now have the entirety of part 1 on the server but Plex still has the old thumbnails from the previous duration of the film that does not match the now longer duration.
I wanted to just delete the movie from Plex so that I could add it again and have Plex update the thumbnails like it would for any new movie added to the server. I was hoping this would fix another issue: when Plex is running - pt2, clicking on the movie settings immediately causes a Playback error.

The issue I’m running into is Plex always recognizes my old thumbnails and metedata whenever I push the movie back to the server. I make a copy of the files, delete the server side files through Plex, empty the trash, stop the server from running, relaunch the server, delete the trash again, and then push the movie to the server. Every time it Plex still recognizes the movie with it’s old thumbnails and even where I left off in viewing.

I’ve never had this happen and it’s driving me nuts. How do I delete this gat dang movie

The Plex Dance

Side note: for 2 part movies (like LOTR), I recommend to:

  1. rip both parts without transcoding
  2. combine the parts using this method [HowTo]: joining multi-part movies files with MKVtoolnix GUI
  3. If you want to save space, transcode the combined file with e.g. Handbrake

Thanks for the tips. The Plex dance worked but I’m still having some issues. I’ll just save myself future headaches and join the multi part movies when I have time. Thanks again.
