Add a second PC (server) - How To?

FYI, You should not post your public IP address.

The Synology person sounds confused. Plex works on DSM 7.0.x and DSM 7.1. There were problems with DSM 7.1 beta. See this post.

Not sure what that means.

Are all three servers listed in Authorized Devices? If not, which ones are not listed?

Can you access the Plex Media Server via its IP address: http://192.168.1.181:32400/web?

Can you access the Plex settings via https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/web/general? You should be able to access the settings for all three Plex Media Servers. You posted a pic above showing DS720 and OldPC. You should now see NewPC added to the list.

That means it only works on your local network. You can’t be at a coffee shop, etc.

Be sure to replace “80” with the remote access port for your Plex server.

I know it’s not a big deal probably, but I most always launched Plex via Synology. Since it’s worked for 7-8 months without fail, it seems a router setting with changing some ext. port forwarding? It worked for months, suddenly didn’t work with stuff I was doing, then worked after some change I made in the router, and then it now doesn’t work. Frustrating.

I did add a Plex certificate in Synology. But that didn’t matter. I also restarted the NAS.

I didn’t change anything in the router. Don’t think I changed anything the NAS. And when you say “for your plex server” I’m assuming you mean Synology? I don’t know where or how to do this at either method. :frowning: I’m so sorry. Any help would be deeply appreciated. I mean, Plex is rolling with the new PC and NAS and old PC, but I sure would like to get this figured out. I realize it’s not Plex related really, but I had to have done something where Plex lost site of my Plex launch page when I clicked on the app in NAS.

Do you have any ideas? Perhaps I’ve not set the router up right even thought Plex is working okay. Maybe the ports I changed on the old/new PC are conflicting with Plex in Synology which has a different internal port than the two PCs. I changed nothing on the NAS through all of this new setup.

I’m running DSM 7.0.1 on my DS918+. From the other post you can see that DSM 7.1 is supported. BTW, the person who wrote that post, ChuckPA, handles Synology packaging and testing for Plex. If Plex did not work on Synology, he would know about it (and there would be a lot of people posting on the forum about it).

The version of Plex Media Server available in Synology Package Center is a beta release, is outdated, and should not be installed. Maybe that is what the Synology person is referencing. BTW, it is outdated because Synology will not update it.

Thanks for the explanation. I don’t know why it won’t open. I never access Plex that way. I have a shortcut on the bookmark bar in my browser for app.plex.tv.

canyouseeme.org is just another way to verify remote access is working OK.

Try this:

On either NewPC or OldPC, launch a browser and go to canyouseeme.org.

“Your IP” should match your public IP address.
Change “Port to Check” from 80 to 32401 and click Check Port.
It should say success.
Repeat for 32403 and 34002.

If I may add here?

PMS works for all “Release” versions of DSM.

There were problems with the DSM 7.1 BETA just as there were with the DSM 7.0 BETA.

Now that everything is Final Release – The Plex package for Synology DSM7 continues to work without needing any modifications.

I went to Plex and downloaded the latest .spk version of plex to install. I stop Plex app and go to manual install and browse to the .spk file that I downloaded and install it. I should have the latest Plex app for synology: PlexMediaServer-1.26.1.5772-872b93b91-x86_64_DSM6.spk

Perhaps the one in their Package center is Beta but I’ve updated it a few times now.

I think what’s missing is the login info for my Plex synology account. It has my username and so forth as I already showed. It’s http://myusername.synology.me:32400/web. That’s what launches in the browser. I believe it’s a router setting related to port forwarding because that’s what I’ve been working on with the old/new PC (not the NAS) and haven’t touched the NAS.

I opened a browser but actually right-clicked on canyouseeme and said to open in a new window (browser). It still sees nothing but the .IP which is part of my external address (and not the specific IP for my old PC (I’m on a new PC - the old PC has the same ext. port number as the external address at the end, whatever that means.

I switched to the external port for the NAS and it was a success. The Old PC is also a success. The new PC is also being seen.

Just a word to let you know that I got this resolved. I had a port numbered wrong. I was doing a lot of work between the old PC and the new PC and getting the servers to show in Plex. However, one Port ext. address for Plex that I had setup in my Plex for the NAS got changed somehow. I’m the only one who changed it so it was operator error. Once I got it set back correctly, it launched right out of the NAS without fail and took me right to Plex.

Problem solved. Sorry for the numerous exchanges. Something so small as this ended up being the solution - so thank you for all your help with this and the other elements in this exchange.

THANK YOU!

So you transposed a couple of digits after staring at similar numbers on a computer screen for hours. OMG! Nobody has ever done that before. Fifty lashes with a wet noodle for you!

Glad you have things working and that I could help.

Cheers.

I laughed out loud when I read your reply because it is SO true. The solution is right in front of you and you are so frustrated and bamboozled that you look right past it. I’ll accept the 50 lashes willingly as they are well-deserved!

Yeah, I went back to a capture I had taken some time ago in my router’s folder of notes and captures of things, and I just went; “Okay, what’s different here?” That’s when I noticed my mistake. I made the simple one digit change and that was it. It came right up as it used to. Geez!!!

And yes, you really did help. I’ve learned something here through all this, so that’s never a bad thing.

Thank you again SO much!

BTW, I had submitted a ticket to Synology about Plex not launching out of their software (which I fixed - 50 lashes, haha). Anyway, I thought you might find it interesting to see their response on Plex Media Server not being in version 7. Perhaps I’m misunderstanding all this but what I can do in Plex currently is to save the PMS folder and related files to backup so I’d have in case of a crash.

Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

I would not contact Microsoft for assistance running Plex Media Server on Windows. Neither would I contact Synology for assistance running Plex Media Server on a Synology NAS.

If you need assistance with Plex Media Server on a Synology NAS, ask in the server-synology section of the forum.

Gotcha. THANKS!
