"Add Folders" not showing up when adding a library

Server Version#: 1.18.6.2350
Player Version#:

Hello,

I am running two My Cloud Home devices and enabled the Plex server on each.

It’s my understanding that this creates two different servers that run independently of each other. That is fine. I’ve read this support article on the Western Digital My Cloud Home Drive https://support.plex.tv/articles/115003310834-western-digital-my-cloud-home/

However, the problem I am having is that on one of the drives/servers I am able to “add folder” when adding a library and the other the option doesn’t even show up.

I understand there are the pre-populated Plex folders that get made in the drive when enabling the Plex server. But for the one drive/server I wanted to create a custom library of concert videos I have. I was able to do so on the one drive. The option shows up.

The support article says that this isn’t possible with a My Cloud Home drive, but I was able to get it to work with the one. So, it must be possible now?

But the help I need is how to get it to work on the other drive/server.

Upon further looking, the Plex Media Servers on each of the drives are different versions…

The one that IT WORKS on is
Plex Server Version 1.25.9.5752-344846934
Software Version 8.9.0-108

The one IT DOESNT work is
Plex Server Version 1.18.6.2350
Software Version 7.16.0-220

I’m guessing these different versions could be the culprit? I know it says there is no way to force an update. With that being said, how do they get updated?

Hope this all makes sense. I found a reddit article with someone that had the same problem… https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/ub3uiv/add_folders_option_not_showing_in_my_plex/

I’m obviously having the same issue, but since I can add folders on one of them and the other I cannot, it seems like there is more to the issue here.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The WD MyCloud Home has a severe restriction as it has each library type hard-wired to the respective “Shared XYZ” folder (e.g. movie-type libraries point to Plex > Shared Movies).
Could it be you were running a Plex Media Server on a different device before, pointing it to the media on your WD MyCloud Home?

I understand that has the severe restriction BUT it DOES work on one of the drives. So that needs explained then why it works on one of the drives and not on the other…especially if its designed to not work that way at all.

This folder is something I created only after I knew I could add a folder. So it wasn’t there in the past for me to point to with any other device or server.

Ideas coming to mind:

  • the other WD NAS isn’t a WD MyCloud Home but another series (e.g. PR2100/4100 running WD OS3/OS5) – those don’t have that restriction
  • the other WD NAS isn’t hosting its own server but merely acting as storage for some other device running a PMS (e.g. on a different Windows machine)

…as an aside to my last reply, the only folders I can point to are within those “Shared XYZ” folders. So it’s not that I was able to point to say my C drive or anything. It only allowed me to add a folder to create a library that was already within the “Shared XYZ” which is fine and what I was trying to do with the other drive/server.

Also, thanks for the replies…

The other WD NAS is definately a WD MyCloud Home. Looks like one, says its one, so if it isn’t one, then there is a entirely different problem, ha!

If the other one isn’t hosting its own server that would mean its broken so-to-speak? That’s what it is designed to do.

I heard back from WD in a support ticket I created regarding the problem. I followed instructions to force a reboot of the WD device with the older Plex server version. Now that the server is updated and the same on both drives it will allow me to “add folder” on my other drive.

So it looks like with the newest Plex server that’s on the WD MyCloud Home drives it will allow you to “add folder.” Of course you can only point to a folder within the set group of pre-populated Plex folders, but at least you can create custom libraries from the content on the drive.

So for anyone having the same problem as above. Make sure to force a reboot which will force an update to the current version of the Plex server on the WD MyCloud Home drive
