I stopped using Plex a time ago because of this bug and it still seems present. I deleted my Plex library and installed the newest version for my Synology NAS (see versions above).
I then added one single Movies library named “Cinema” and added the volume1/SynStation/Video/Cinema folder to it, nothing else. I let the scanner run for a while and noticed that - yet again - it scanned and added files outside (one level up and then inside other folders inside the Video folder, for example movies in a “Home Movies” folder inside “Video”). SynStation is simply a shared folder on the first level of the NAS to seperate video files from other functionality (Docker, Homes, Surveillance etc…)
Seriously, what’s going on here? I can’t imagine such a serious bug being unnoticed for years or am I doing something wrong?
If you can provide server logs we might be able to tell you.
Also please show how you have the folder path defined for PMS to scan in the library section?
Sorry, I’m not comfortable with uploading that much information on a public forum, so I tried interpreting the log files myself.
Here’s one line excerpt:
Jun 24, 2021 20:33:37.349 [0x7f54b88fdb38] DEBUG - Scanner: Processing directory /volume1/SynStation/Video/3D/....... (parent: yes)
This confirms that the scanner went a level up and then down inside the 3D folder in the Video folder.
If there’s something specific that I should look for, please tell me, but I completely understand if you can’t help me under these circumstances.

Please edit the library, choose Add Folders.
It will show the directory path added to the library.

Just as reference, I have a Synology running the same server version and I have never experienced that bug.
My folder path for my Movie library:
I’m even using the wrong folder (using Synology created video folder is frowned upon) and it only scans files and subfolders in that listed directory. No leaving and scanning other items.

Did you, manually or with an external tool/application, create any symbolic links to files or directories?
Symbolic links, or ‘–bind’ mounts, are the only way it might escape a directory tree .
