Adding movies on new Qnap

I recently upgraded my Qnap to a TS264. Plex is working well thru my Mac and Roku, but it will not allow any new movies. to be added I made sure the format is correct and tried both an MP4 and MKv.
I restarted the server. I removed and re-added Plex server and Plex will still not add movies. I’m wondering if I need an older version of Plex server…?
I would appreciate any help.

Thanks for the logs.

In looking at Plex.tv, I see where both your old and new QNAPs are listed twice.

After uninstalling PMS from the QNAP, did you go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/devices/pms

and remove the old server instances?

Unfortunately, uninstalling from QNAP doesn’t notify Plex.tv as well as it erases all the local PMS metadata. This means you’ll end up with a new server ID and the same hostname but Plex.tv will look for the old server.

This makes claiming the new server ID/instance hard without first clearing or using an external tool like mine (which runs from the QNAP SSH command line prompt (as admin))

Thank you Chuck. I had no idea I had to do that. I followed the link to Authorised Devices and yes, my old server was listed together with two instances of my new server. I deleted the old server, and the previous day’s version of the new server. So now there is only one server.
I hope to goodness I have done that right! Should it now work, or do I need to do anything else please?

I did now look at Plex.tv and the two movies I added are still not there, or on the Qnap. Does it take a while for Plex to see them? If I ‘optimise’ the library, will that force Plex to see them please?

With all the old instances removed,

1. Close and reopen the browser
2. Open http://ip.addr.of.qnap:32400/web
3. The web app will download known servers from plex.tv (none)
4. It will present you with the sign in and ‘Got It’ (that’s the wizard starting)
5. You know what to do from there

substitute the LAN IP of YOUR QNAP.

My QNAP is at 192.168.0.21
Therefore I use http://192.168.0.21:32400/web

Sorry Chuck. I was miles away when I read the previous posting.
I followed the instructions, but it just loaded my original Plex page, using Chrome. I tried Firefox (Chome cookie there?) and it started as you said, but still no new movies added when I picked the Qnap.
Should I force a re-index, or just wait to see if anything gets added…?

The fact that Plex does not see that a new movie has been added to Multimedia/Movies, I just wonder if it’s anything to do with folder permissions on the Qnap, when Plex can see any play movies in that folder that it has indexed?

I have updated Plex Server on the Qnap to 1.40.4, and refreshed the meta data, but still not seeing movies added. It will play a movie with no problem though, so it must be seeing the server correctly. I would very much appreciate any help.

You can’t use the Multimedia share on QNAP.
Multimedia is only for QNAP products (Video Station, etc).
It does not work for Plex (never has)

1. Create real shared folders for your media
2. Move your files to those shared folders
3. Tell Plex to use those real shared folders

Believe it or not, I hope I may have cracked it. I created a shared folder and added 1 movie to it, edited Movies in Plex and pointed to that folder. It’s added it…!
I think I will copies off my movies first as I only have 1.5tb free, and I don’t know how the Qnap handles the MOVE function - I don’t want to run out of space.
Hopefully, next time I post it will be to tell you it’s done. What I find strange is that it all worked perfectly on my old server with everything under the Multimedia folder, but perhaps that was just lucky.

I think I will copies off my movies first as I only have 1.5tb free, and I don’t know how the Qnap handles the MOVE function -

In Linux, “Move” is a RENAME when it’s on the same volume/disk. When it’s on different volumes/disks,. it copies one file at a time and cleans up behind itself (tail dragging delete)

Just remembered… if you use QNAP FileStation, the move will be quick.
When using a workstation / computer over the net, you can’t be guaranteed of how it will work.

Thanks Chuck. Plex is such an awesome app, I’m so pleased it looks to be working. At the moment it is showing “Activity” Detecting Intros. I guess it’s going to take a while…

I’ve only found one problem. There is a 10 season series in TV on the Qnap, but Plex in putting about half of them in Movies. It seems it is selecting them randomly.
Is there any way that I can force Plex to put them into TV

Are you using the Plex naming standard for series? It’s very important to avoid mismatches
