I apologize for posting in General Discussion. Really not sure, where to post this, as I do not know, if this is a Player, Server or Database issue.
I try to set up Smart Collections. In this case namely a collection for Aki Kaurismäki, showing movies with him as director, writer and/or actor. For director and writer this works as expected. But unfortunately I can not set up the Actor rule. He simply does not get listed as Actor there. Trying to type his name does result in an empty actor list. Going through the list manually he is missing. And this is despite two movies listing him as actor and clicking his name or portrait also leads to a search resulting in both movies. And he is spelled exactly as in Director and Writer fields (as far as I can say from looking at the names).
If I had to make a guess, I’d say the actor field either in database or in search does not properly handle international characters (like in this case the ä in Kaurismäki).
For any advice how to circumvent or fix this problem, I’d be grateful.
From what I’ve seen, Plex will find all items involving an actor if you search for their name. The filter seems only to consider the top-3(?) actors from the cast list. Once an actor appears in the top-3 of 1 movie, Plex will show all their movies if you filter it.
I guess that’s to avoid having thousands of entries in the regular filter… though I imagine the advanced filter should allow us to type in names from the entirety of all actors in your library.
I thought there was already an existing feature suggestion discussing this but cannot find one… so let’s make this thread a new suggestion instead. Don’t forget to vote for your own suggestion.
It doesn’t make any sense to have a search for a field, which doesn’t find all entries. I mean, Actors is already a gamble, as it greatly varies how many of the cast you get at all. But in my case I rarely need to search for top cast, this is stuff I already know anyway. In my mind such search behavior is more like a bug than a missing feature.
I would understand, if the jump list/drop down would be restricted to a certain amount and I would then have to type in any other actors. But a filter not finding them at all (actually not being able to search them)?
So, yes, I’d really love to see this feature.
