What’s happened. The agents were scraping the posters, casts and synopsis’ until today when I’m only getting the titles and sysnopsis. And certain movies refuse to scrap at all. This is very odd. Is there something up with the database?
Yesterday it was working perfectly now it’s broken . . . Gwangi was yesterday and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea today. Something’s not right. I didn’t change anything, so what gives?
Seriously what’s going on? My system is no longer scraping movies I add properly. I need some assistance.
Refresh some of these movies then grab some logs and post them here.

When you say refresh, what do you mean? Sorry of the noob question
Another problem is that Plex Movie seems to be the only agent avilable, The Movie Database seems to be missing. I thought to software was perhaps out of date but apparently it’s all updated. Everything was working fine a few days before. Some movies just won’t scrape no matter how much info I give.
Thanks, those logs are right.
Your problem seems to be with how your folders are structured. It looks like you’ve just set the library to scan a folder containing a bunch of subdirectories (which potentially also contain TV shows?)
I would start here and just get your library paths corrected: Naming and organizing your Movie files | Plex Support
When editing the library, in the “Add Folders” section your paths should be pointing to folders containing only movie files or folders which each contain a single movie.
For example:
In this case above the /Volumes/Disk 1/Movies folder should look like:
/Volumes
/Disk 1
/Movies
Avatar (2009).mkv
Alien (1979).mkv
or (the preferred method)
/Volumes
/Disk 1
/Movies
/Avatar (2009)
Avatar (2009).mkv
/Alien (1979)
Alien (1979).mkv
You can add multiple paths to the library but each one must have the movies directly below it.
Ohhhh okay that makes sense. I used to have all my movies in one directory but spread over multiple machines. I recently consolidated the library into one drive and it seemed to be okay but I think my mixed up sceme is breaking down. I’ll go read the docs and try and do it properly.
What’s the rationale for having movies in separate single directories?
It speeds up the scanning process when you add or remove items in the library. As well as allowing you to do more advanced things with local extras and other local assets.
Okay this is annoying. I can’t have them all in separate folders, there’s 1,047 movies . . . so I put them all in one. Refreshed metadata, scraped it again. Nothing has changed. The movies which won’t scrape still won’t scrape. It’s like the database is only half connected. It doesn’t work for movies I put in the database I put in in the last few days. Everything was working perfectly and scraping perfectly till then. I think it’s not a folder issue I think it’s a database issue.
Now if I unmatch films and then try to rematch them even though they come up on the search the data is not applied to the film and it remains unmatched
Yep okay I’ve tried everything. Refreshed the metadata, unmatched and matched, deleted the server and reinstalled it and tried again. The movies are still not scraping. It’s getting worse. Really bummed as I can’t get it working.
Another weird thing I started the day with 1047 movies and now I have 1013. I think my Plex server is rotting . . . What can I do? I just spent about 4 hours dicking around with it and it’s gotten worse.
So the problem is not that it’s not scraping, it’s that the data is not being used by the server. You can search for a film and click on it but nothing changes and the data from the Plex Legacy isn’t transferred to the movie. Baffling!
I’m at my wits end. Gonna have to leave it for a while. Plex was great while it was working but it’s just really annoying me now. Here’s the logs after all my tries at fixing it. I kinda give up. Any suggestions gratefully recieved.

Have you checked the unmatched and duplicates filter within your library you created ? I’d imagine the movies are sitting in there. Taking a very quick look at your logs I can see many problems with the naming of your files. Just a few examples below:
- [/Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive/Hemel Odeon Server/The Hobbit -The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) 720.mp4]
- [/Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive/Hemel Odeon Server/The Silence Of The Lambs (1991) 720.mp4]
- [/Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive/Hemel Odeon Server/The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey 2012 3D SBS 1080.mp4]
- [/Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive/Hemel Odeon Server/The Lone Ranger 2013 1080.mp4]
- [/Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive/Hemel Odeon Server/The Lodger (1927) Special Edition 720p.mp4]
- [/Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive/Hemel Odeon Server/The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) 720.mp4]
I’d say this is why some stuff is being found and others not. Your file names are unfortunately poorly named so plex is having trouble matching them.
I believe stuff within () are ignored and used for year matching when duplicates are found with the movies with the same name. Regardless, I’d imagine how you have named The Lodger as an example is most likely being searched for as The Lodger Special Edition 720p and then no match found.
I think this is the movie The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) — The Movie Database (TMDb) so you could try and rename it to The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927).mp4 and rescan and see if it finds it. An even better way is to add a matching id like The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) {tmdb-2760}.mp4 which will then 100% match the movie to correctly.
I’d also HIGHLY recommend putting movies into folders and not have everything in a flat directory. Once you get your files named correctly you could automate the move with a simple for loop like the following for f in *.mp4; do echo "${f%.mp4}"; mkdir "${f%.mp4}"; mv "${f%.mp4}".* "${f%.mp4}"; done run from within the root folder of your files. But that is entirely up to you.
Thanks for the work you put in, appreciate it. Here’s the thing, this is not a new install. Everything has been working fine till a few days ago. Those movies you mentioned scraped perfectly before. Now NOTHING will scrape properly. Things I added a week or so ago were perfectly fine. So, what’s changed? I haven’t altered anything and yet out of the blue a few days back all of a sudden nothing scrapes properly. I am at a loss to explain it. I’ve always had all the films in one directory up till this point with no problems.
Could you have switched from the older legacy movie agent to the new one and/or upgraded your library ? That would force a full re-matching of everything in the library so might explain it.
I don’t remember doing that, and in fact I have no idea how I might do that. I can’t seem to get at the agents at all. I’m wondering if I might need to nuke the server app and reinstall to try and get back to factory settings
To clarify, I have a vague memory of being asked by the system to upgrade something, but it was weeks ago not a few days ago, so it doesn;t really explain the sudden change to functionality. I’ve always named my files that way and it’s worked perfectly up till now, so I don’t get it
If you nuke and start again you will be re-matching everything again anyhow. I know its a pain but getting the names of your files right will help things along and run much smoother.
