Airplay Plugin for Plex

Display mirroring will only work with iPad 2, not with the other iOS 5 devices.

My compromise has been to install BananaTV and keep it running in the background. So when the Tv is off and I want to stream music, it gets picked up by BananaTV and controlled by my phone; and when I turn on my TV and Plex I can stream video and then control it with my Plex remote. The problem being that BananaTV works with video as well (but can’t use the screen when Plex is running fullscreen) and you can’t turn that off, so when you stream a video, there are two very similarly named possible targets, only one of which works. NOT very wife-friendly. As far as I can tell, BananaTV cannot be configured to disable video.

Hmm, as I think about it, unless/until someone unifies them in Plex, Anville’s method is probably the way to go - let Plex handle video and photos via this airplay plugin, and use shairport behind the scenes to handle audio streaming.

Do you know if on the iPad 2 audio is streamed too?

I would certainly hope so…

It is, watch the utube video where ie. Slingplayer is AirPlay’ed mirrored

FYI, my compromise has been to ditch the otherwise slick Plex AirPlayer installation detailed in this thread and instead plunked down the $2.99 for AirServer http://www.airserverapp.com/

It’s fully functionally and is aware of Plex/XBMC/Boxee, inasmuch as it fairly gracefully hands over video to QuicktimePlayer-fullscreen and then switches back to Plex (and with photos of course).

It also flawlessly streams audio, can be configured to broadcast a separate, audio-only AirPlay location for receiving just the audio portion of a video (they call it dual-mode AirPlay), can easily change the AirPlay network broadcast name, and, as evidenced by the activity on their blog, is updated quite frequently.

For the price, it really can’t be beat.

Hmm, that sounds nice. Does it open up Quicktime when it plays videos? Whereas with the Plex plugin, Plex takes over the video and I can control it with my Plex remote just like I would a local Plex video, would I have to (e.g.) set up Quicktime in Remote Buddy to control Airplay videos the same way?

You say AirServer can broadcast a separate, audio-only Airplay target… do you know f it’s possible to turn off the video target and only broadcast an audio target? (Letting Plex continue to be the video target)

Okay, I was impatient and tried out AirServer before I got an answer, and it’s pretty good. for $4.99 (not $2.99, but it’s still pretty cheap) you can install it on 5 computers. When running, it will broadcast an Airplay target for audio; and (this is important) when Plex is running, there is still only one Airplay target for video - somehow Plex jumps in front of AirServer and takes the video stream. Whether this is by design or not, it ends up working perfectly - there is only ever one Airplay target available, and it’s the same for both audio and video, and both audio and video seem to work fine.

My only little complaint is that the volume control of audio streams is not great. Where as with BananaTV it goes from mute to quiet to loud, with AirServer it seem to go from mute to loud to very loud. But that’s pretty much okay… I wouldn’t be streaming audio if I didn’t want people to hear it!

Yes, I mentioned in my post that it switches from Plex to QuicktimeplayerX and then back. AirPlay has controls on the screen of the device from which you are sending the stream/link, so you don't need to use Remote Buddy, especially since, presumably, it's a temporary thing (sending video from your device to Quicktime).

I believe that was the impetus behind this feature. You can probably figure out more by going to their website and reading the blog that details news features.

I bought it for $2.99, so it sounds like they upped the price.

Video works great...thank you, thank you!

The part about the audio is a big disappointment and I welcome any work-around in that regard. Would it be possible to stream audio from unencrypted sources (such as Pandora, or in my case, PandoraJam) via AirPlay to Plex? The Plex-hosted airplay client isn't even listed as an option in the PandoraJam output dropdown. All the AppleTVs in the house are listed, however.

--edit--
So I tried AirServer. It worked...somewhat. Getting closer. Now I've stumbled onto AirFoil and this looks promising!

Hi i used the script on Page 7, Photos stream fine via iPhone to Plex, however when I try a video recorded on my iPhone to Plex, it plays about 1-2 seconds then freezes & crashes Plex or my iPhone.

Any help would be appreciated

You guys do realize there is already a commercial app that does that. it is called airserver. http://www.airserverapp.com/

I dont like how airserver opens a new window, doesn’t seem very native and integrated with Plex.

Unfortunately mirroring with the iPad 2 on iOS 5 doesn’t work. It looks like ATV2 sends a signal which enables the slider on the iPad.

Is there a possibility this will work anytime soon?

I tried to install it on my mac mini but i keep getting the error

“no module named pybonjour”

when i run the command

"python airplayer.py

can someone help me please?

Can I use airserver to stream audio to my iOS device and then listen with my headphones while watching video on my HDTV?

Airserver is just that, a server. You stream content to the mac it runs on, not from the mac.

I find that it works great. It just runs in the background and when I start playing music on my idevices or another mac, the audio just plays in the background as Plex is still at the front and active. Usually I don't even have the TV turned on. If I push a movie it switches to a different desktop, Plex slides out and the movie comes up fullscreen. When playback is finished the movie closes and Plex slides back in. I would of course have preferred an inside Plex airserver, but compared to all other solutions I have tried, this one work.

Anyone have this working with the current version of plex and airplayer?

Does the Airplay source show up in the plex client just as Itunes or Movies show up??

Does this option show up in the Roku Client?? In effect - can I use Airplay to get from my Idevice to my TV via Plex??

When you AirPlay something with this software, a movie player just overlays whatever you’re doing in Plex; there’s no visible UI for it until you send an AirPlay stream.

Note that pascalw dropped off the face of the earth a long time back, so I don’t know that this will continue to work. Last I checked a month or so ago it still did, but if you really want to AirPlay to an HTPC, I’d recommend AirServer (with some reservations).
