All media files buffering when attempting to play

Server Version#: From General settings : 1.32.6.7557
Plex web: Version 4.108.0

Hello

I am struggling with my plex server. I am running it on a QNAP TS-251+
Intel Celeron
8GB RAM
2X 6GB HDD in Raid configuration, with 1.8TB of free disk space.
QTS firmware version QTS: 5.1.1.2491

My server is plugged directly into my router, which is a linksys router, but I had this problem with I was plugged into the router supplied by my previous broadband supplier.

No matter what I am attempting to play, either MP4, or MKV files, everything buffers after a few minutes, and once the buffering starts it can barely manage to play a few seconds before it buffering again.

I have tested a sample of my files on my PC using VLC and they all play with no issues. I even used my ipad to connect to my NAS and open the files over the network, and again, the same sample files play with no issues in the VLC app.

So I am pretty sure that its not a problem with my files.

I did some searching, and what I found talked about changing transcoder settings.

I found this page : https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250347-transcoder/ and it mentioned that you should have no need to change any of the settings from the default values,

However I did attempt to make some changes

I set Transcoder quality from Automatic to “Prefer Higher speed encoding”.

This did not solve my problem, except now instead of buffering after a few minutes I receive playback error. With the playback error screen I get sound just no image.

What can people suggest I do to resolve my buffering issues?

Thanks in advance.

The TS-251+ has a J1900 CPU.
The J1900 can only HW transcode up to 1080p video.

The newer TS-251D can HW transcode 4K video.

Playing using VLC or other player doesn’t count here because you’re only accessing the NAS function – which the TS-251+ can do every well at full gigabit speed.

What are you trying to play ? 1080p or 2160p (4K)

Do your videos include subtitles which require “Burning into” the video
(PGS, VOBSUB, or DVDRIP - image based) or are they SRT (Text based) ?

Hi.

Pretty sure I am playing 1080 p not 4K.

My mkv files, when I ripped them include subtitles. Not sure how the subtitles are included in the mkv files, if it helps I used makemkv to create the rips.

For mp4 files I have separate srt files
