Allow user to download content

Hi,

I just wanted to report a correction to the wording in Plex settings but cannot see how to contact Plex other than using the forums.

In the user restrictions menu there is an option for “Allow this user to sync or download content from your server”. However it is not possible to allow another user to download content from your server as outlined in either of the following articles:

The wording should be corrected as it does not allow the functionality and can be confusing.

Yes, it is possible for users to download content.
On a Android phone or tablet or a Apple phone or tablet, your users need to use the respective apps available form the app store for these platforms.

On a desktop computer, they need to use “Plex for Windows”/“Plex for Mac”.

(This is a different app than the “web app”, nor is it Plex Media Player.
The “Download” link which you as the Administrator can use in these apps is indeed not available to other users.)

Thank you for your reply OttoKerner, I see that you are absolutely correct.

I do find it intriguing that this restriction has been added to the web app but not Plex for Windows.

A restriction was not “added”. It was never possible from the beginnning.
A web browser restricts the possibilities of the developer.

A standalone app is much more flexible. Hence why these require much less transcoding from the server and allow you to do other things.

Hi there, not sure if this is the right place to ask this.

But I was wondering if there is any way to just simply download something from your library your android or ios device without having to “sync” the content. I find this feature to be quite buggy and I wish it worked more like the desktop apps where you have the option to just download and not sync.

(The picture will show the download option thats in the windows desktop app)
