Alot of stuttering

Hello everyone! I am experiencing a really annoying issue. I recently bought a lot of pc parts on the blackfriday sale and built a plex server for all my movies. The problem is that when I am streaming to something thats not local the stream often stutters or buffers. I have tried on IOS, Android and Tizen and the issue is on all of them. The stuttering / buffering will happen frequently untill the quality is turned down by alot.

I dont understand what the issue could be, from what i have read i should have more than sufficient CPU, RAM and Internett speeds. The transcoder is 99% of the time throttled, and when its not its never under 1 (i have never seen it under 5)

Also most of my movies are blurays ripped right into a mkv continer with the extras removed (all subtitles and soundtracks still there). So i usually have a bitrate from 20000 to 50000. However the issue seems to solve itself when transcoding it down to a lower quality like 8000 in bitrate.

First I suspected that it might just be the clients internett connection that was too slow, but my freiend who has 150/150 is alo experiencing the issue. At this point in really lost…

Server Specs:

  • 16GB 2133GHz DDR4 Ram
  • 2x WD RED 10TB 5400 rpm (pooled)
  • Intel I7 8086k Limited Edition (water cooled)
  • Windows 10 PRO

Plex Media Server:

  • Version 1.14.1.5488
  • Transcoder Quality = Make my CPU hurt

Internet Speeds:

  • 500/500

PS. Writing this from my iPad so there might be a few spelling mistakes here and there :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks in advance,
Tommy

Do you have “Use hardware acceleration when available” Selected. And how many streams are you trying this on? I had the same issue until i put the transcoding on my GPU instead of CPU.

I have it off as I dont have a GPU in the system

Try taking it off “Make my CPU hurt” and try at Automatic and see how it works out for you.

Holy shootzle, that did the trick. It works now, i suspect that somethimes this will lead to a worse quality though?

Glad that worked out for you. Most likely not it just might a little bit more buffering in the beginning but by making your CPU hurt it has a hard time running Windows, Plex, and transcoding if needed so this way you can balance it out equally. I would recommend a GPU and enable hardware acceleration. thats what i did and i can now handle around 8-10 1080 streams local and remote.

Okay, thanks. I think I’ll just get a quadro p2000 then

Thanks for the help!

I am using nvidia and works great you need to make sure it’s supported by plex

I will, thanks for the heads up

Yes you do.

The 8086K has Intel UHD Graphics 630. It can easily transcode multiple 1080p videos. It can also transcode 4K HEVC.

Oh, damn, didnt know that. I will turn it back on then.

Thanks for taking the time to look into my setup, and telling me!
