I’ve been running plex on my nvidia shield for 3 years with no issue, now it can’t playback anything. My library is on a NAS. I can play fine from a Windows pc using the web interface. But when I try from the SHIELD, I get the “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again”.
I’ve also noticed remote access is no longer working. I’ve verified the port forwarding and port config in plex, but it won’t go. But I’m unsure if it’s related to my issue since My shield & nas are both on LAN.
Things I’ve tried:
Clearing app cache
clearing app data
Optimize database
Log out/back in / re-linked account.
verify NAS access.
Removed and re-added NAS as remote storage on SHIELD.
Rebooted shield.
Verified latest shield updates.
Also tried changing various settings that seemed to have no effect/relation to the issue.
Also verified Kodi can play the files with no issue.
Finally I uninstalled the Plex updates so it went back to the original version from the factory. It worked fine then. But once I re-update, it stops working.
Hi.
I have the same problem on WD MyCloud server. With the latest android app update none of my movies or series playing. What I get message is " An Error Occurred While Attempting to Play Video".
It drives me crazy. I can not use my library. Only one thing helped, but this is a workaround, is that if you allow external player to play the files (for me it is MK Player). It plays the file from the plex server but does not record where I left off.
I hope somebody reads this from Plex. As I can not use my library from plex android app as a lifetime subscriber.
@CatDragon20 Many users are experiencing issues with the Android/Android TV app. The problem is being investigated, but is proving difficult to pin down (not all users are affected).
Also, please pull the log file from the Plex app (not the server) on the Shield.
In the Plex app, go to Settings → Advanced → Network Logging and turn it on.
In a web browser on a PC/Mac/etc (not the Shield), go to http://[IPofAndroidDevice]:32500/logging. The URL, with IP address, is displayed in the lower right corner of the screen when you are in the app settings and have network logging enabled.
Save the browser page as a text file, copy/paste the info into a text file, etc.
@FordGuy61 Thanks for the response. I verified logging enabled on the web interface, enabled it in the app on SHIELD. Made three attempts to play a title (two TV shows, one movie), all with the same response. Downloaded the logs from the web app and copied/pasted the log from the link you gave.
If you have not already done so, update to the current release of both the Plex Media Server and the Plex Android TV app on your Shield. You can update both via the Google Play Store app on the Shield. Restart the Shield after installing the updates.
The logs have PMS v1.19.1.2630, which was released in April 2020. The current release is 1.23.4.4805 or 1.23.5.4801 (PlexPass/Beta).
The installed Android TV app is 8.19.1.26306, which was released in late June. The current version, 8.20.0, was release two days ago.
Many of the reports of “An Error Occurred…” with AndroidTV clients are from users on Western Digital NAS, running older versions of PMS (1.18.x), and unfortunately cannot currently update to a more recent version.
Updating to a current release did help other users that were seeing the same error message (and were on a platform that could be updated).
@FordGuy61 That seems to have fixed it, thanks. Took me a bit to find both updates: Google play now lists Plex Android TV as “Plex: Stream Free moves & Watch Live TV shows Now” so I missed it first time.
This fixed another issue I was having as well: I had lost remote access capability even though nothing on my network or Plex settings had changed.
I do not know the root cause of the problem, but it seems to have something to do with secure communications between current Android/AndroidTV clients and older versions of Plex Media Server.
Your client log had several of these entries: [FFmpeg] [ERROR] [tls @ 0x2aac9282c0] Peer certificate failed verification
I’m running current releases on my Plex server, Shield client, and FireStick 4K client. I cannot reproduce the problem and the log files from the Shield & FireStick clients do not have the Peer certificate error message.
The error messages are most likely gone from your Shield client logs as well, now that you’ve updated things.
If you have not already done so, try disabling secure connections on the server (Network → Secure Connections = Disabled) and client (Settings → Advanced → Allow Insecure Connections = Always), and rebooting both the server & client. Granted, it is a workaround, but it has worked for some users.
