An error occurred while attempting to play this video. please try restarting both plex media server and this app

I’ve seen forums floating around, but I am not able to see a solution. I am using a Samsung Smart TV, which has a Plex app (server). I have had no problems over the last 3 months, and now suddenly I get ‘an error occurred while attempting to play this video. please try restarting both plex media server and this app’ when trying to play certain TV Series. I only get this issue on my TV, and have no issues playing back the same videos via mobile app or web app.

What is wrong? It happened overnight!

I am getting the same issue on my sony android smart tv. it plays most of my libruary but not some of the latest downloads. Even though the same new media files play on the plex apps on PC and Laptop.
The Plex app version is 8.0017276 (there may be a point or two missing)
server version is latest - and plays the files fine itself.

I saw someone posted disabling the audio pass through temporary resolved the issue, which I checked last night was already disabled.

Had some success today:

  • selected audio pass through via HDMI, and those particular files that had the error messages finally played. However, the resolution of those videos were distorted (ie. 480p resolution) whereby the screens were compressed
  • revert the audio pass through as disabled, and those particular videos played with no issues, but the resolution remained 480p
  • HD settings was already convert automatically, so I changed it to play original quality, but was still playing 480p format
  • revert the HD settings to automatically convert, AND the resolution converted back automatically (which was what I was used to)

Realised that I had to keep reverting the resolutions settings a few times with each playback, as the settings don’t stick. But at least there are no error messages now. Hopefully this helps you!

I don’t know if there is a bug somewhere, but this has never happened before. I tried to find an option to see if there is an update available in the Plex app setting or the NVIDIA Shield settings, but there is no option to locate for an update (if any). Does anyone know?
