I just signed up for a plex pass recently specifically to use the DVR service. On some shows I get “An error occurred while postprocessing the recording” I has happened twice on the show “Young Sheldon” different weeks different episodes. The majority of shows do complete, I would say 95% complete successfully. Unfortunately the show that I look forward to the most fails.
I’m using the built in Commercial removal.
Plex Version(beta)Version 1.10.1.4602
I have an HDHomeRun T1 and HDHomeRun DUAL
I was talking to Kelvin via email and he suggested that I post to the forums. I thought that is a little strange, being asked to post to a forum to resolve an issue for a service that i’m paying a monthly fee for. But, I thought I’d give it a try.
Have you tried turning off the commercial removal to see if the show records fine? Would need logs covering time a recording failed to see if anything is reason is showing in logs. Logs can be downloaded by going to Settings/Server/Help and clicking the download logs link. Please ensure Debug Logging is enabled, Verbose logging is disabled, and Allow Plex Tokens in logs is disabled. If Debug logging is not set you many need to wait until next occurrence to submit logs. When you upload the zip file of logs please include show and start/end times to make searching log easier.
I turned off commercial removal on “Young Sheldon” because it happened 2x on that show, will need to wait until next recording to see if there is a difference.
Logs attached for the other failed shows below:
12/17
1-4:25PM - NFL Football
7:30-8:30PM - 60 Minutes
12/18
6:30-7AM - The Cat in the Hat Knows alot about that!
9:30-10AM - Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood
Appears that Commercial Skipping is causing the error message:
Dec 19, 2017 07:02:15.991 [3208] DEBUG - Jobs: ‘C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Commercial Skipper.exe’ exit code for process 5792 is 0
Dec 19, 2017 07:02:15.991 [3208] DEBUG - DVR:Recorder: EDL failed to build.
Dec 19, 2017 07:02:15.991 [3208] DEBUG - DVR:Grabber: Scheduling ‘The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! - E24 - Surprise Surprise; A Howling Good Time’ for assimilation.
Not much else displayed other than EDL failed to build.
Hi John,
Thanks for looking into the logs.
I’m not sure what EDL is, but is there some code that can retry the EDL build if it fails the first time around?
Maybe if there is some kind of corrupt file would there be something that the devs can do to look for the corrupt file and disregard/continue without failing completely. At least we would have part of the show to watch.
I’m just a guy that is paying the $5 monthly fee to use the DVR out of the box and it’s not quite working 100% Any solution for the devs to fix the software or for someone to tell me my setup is bad.
Pretty standard machine here, AMD 8core 4GHz, 32GB RAM, Win10 Pro 64bit
Where do i find the video files? Even if I find them though, I think it might take a code fix to resolve unfortunately. From all of these beta releases it seems like Plex Devs are on top of things though which is reassuring.
EDL file is what is used by comskip, marks where commercials start/end.
The recording seems to have finished successfully, it is just the Commercial Skipping that seems to have failed.
The video should be located:
Dec 19, 2017 07:02:15.991 [1836] DEBUG - DVR:Grabber: Postprocessing, we’re going to put The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! - E24 - Surprise Surprise; A Howling Good Time in **F:\PlexRecordings\TV\The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That (2010)\Season 01\The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That (2010) - S01E24 - Surprise Surprise; A Howling Good Time.ts**
Yes, 1.11.0 was just released. Probably not a lot there to address this issue though.
Thanks for the location, it looks like it is there. When i opened the .ts file the quality looked really good. Anyway the title and the filenames don’t look like they match up, maybe that is an issue? Season1 Episode 24 shows Batty for Bats, but the file is different for S01E24 showing Surprise Surprise; a Howling good time.
Some are the same but episodes don’t seem to match.
Yep. I see the same issue with shows I record for a friends kids. Cat in the Hat and Curious George. TheTVDB seems to have them separated out to their 15 minute episodes but the broadcast station seems to combine the 2 shows into a single episode. For example, in your screenshot the first episode S01E02 - I Love the Nightlife; Oh Give Me a Home is actually Episodes 3 & 4 on TheTVDB.com. Whenever E01 is recorded and added to your library it will show as S01E01 - Show Me the Honey; Migration Vacation which is E01 & E02.
Thanks for the explanation. The kids shows I don’t care much about anyway, just need some content for the kids.
It seems that the file plays fine as a .ts file in windows 10 “Movies and TV” I don’t think it is corrupt? If it were corrupt it shouldn’t be playable @ all right?
If it is the EDL and has to do with commercial skip causing the “An error occurred while postprocessing the recording” I wonder if it’s possible for them to forgo the commercial skip if this EDL issue is received and just place the recording in it’s entirety so that it’s playable without the yellow warning signs?
Think they are still trying to alert you that there was something wrong during post processing. There could be a bad area in the recording. Did you watch it all the way through.

It’s gonna be hard to make it all the way through a kids show beginning is good, end is good, and clicking in between works fine. Not sure how to tell if there were an issue. Wish there was a process I could run the .ts file through to check it for consistency.
If it were a bad part in the recording, what would the cause of that be? Even if there was a bad part in the recording, couldn’t this be resolved by skipping the few seconds of the show on error and make it available like the other shows? I don’t care if I miss a few seconds of a show. I do care about missing the show completely though.
