"An error occurred while postprocessing the recording" - DVR help

Hi all - I have a HomeRun Prime and Plex setup. I have everything working well and 99% of my DVR recordings finish. However, I am trying to record “Wheeler Dealers” and several of them have displayed “an error occurred while postprocessing the recording” and thus I don’t get the episode. Can anyone point me in the direction of the logs (Windows server) or know if there’s a fix? I am running Plex Server Version 1.11.0.4633 thanks!

Same thing here - running Version 1.11.0.4666 on Windows 10. Only one recording doing this after 58 seconds. All others are fine. 2nd time in 2 weeks.

This happens to me about 20% of my DVR recordings. It is incredibly frustrating, especially when it happens during season finales (cough survivor). We cut cord many years ago so fam is kinda used to quirks, but am REALLY trying to kill of the last Windows Media Center box in the house (our main DVR for OTA) and working hard to convince family plex is much better, but of course this keeps happening to the wife’s favorite shows…grrr.

I have noticed that when I disable commercial skipping I dont see the error nearly as often.

Same type of problem here…I did post logs at the link in another forum post I did recently at https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/304055/back-to-failed-transcoding-with-recording-ota-tv

I’m hoping someone can view the logs, and fix this…

I’m wondering if including the fantastic feature of commercial removal that has caused this (LOVE that feature!)…but that is pure unfounded speculation on my part

I have been experiencing the same error message. Plex was running fine, recording and removing commercials on specific shows, then all of a sudden, most of the shows where I specified removal of commercials failed during the post-processing step (removing commercials). At least, in my case, the shows were recorded in full and in their final desired folder location.

It seems to be related to folder(s) permissions.

The recordings default temporary folder is ’ .grab ’ folder located under the specified library in the record options for the show(s). Although I configured the ’ .grab ’ folder with FULL permissions, the error still occurred.

Looking into the server settings further, under ‘Transcoder’, I had not specified a “Transcoder temporary directory”. I had left it blank (default). By default, the transcode sessions would be in “Plex Media Server/Cache/Transcode/Sessions”
I haven’t confirmed this but I suspect that if you change the permissions to this “sessions” folder, those folder permissions get reset at some point (perhaps during a server update?) which causes to fail during the postprocessing of the recording(s).

So, I now have specified an actual value under PMS Settings>Transcoder>“Transcoder temporary directory” (e.g. “/Plex/” ).
I set up a recording and let PMS create the required temporary transcode sub-folder structure as follows:
/Plex/Transcode/Sessions/…
And finally, I set full permissions on the “Transcode” and “Sessions” folders.

It seems to have fixed my issue with this error…for now…time will tell.

I am having this same issue. I did what leguelp did on creating a new temporary folder location but the transcoding is still failing. The recordings eventually do show up in the proper folders but commercials are still there. Version 1.11.0.4666 on windows 10 PC.

@Markdonnell1975, as I was troubleshooting this, I failed to mention that I also reverted back to PMS Version 1.11.0.4633.

@leguelp Thanks. I will revert and give it a try.

@leguelp I reverted back to 1.11.0.4633 and still no joy. I am trying 1.10.1.4561 because I know that all was working well on that build. However, So far it seem like its going to be the same issue. Plex takes over 1 tuner of the 4 on my HD homerun and records the show but it doesn’t seem to release the tuner once the show/recording is over. If I look at the tuner via hd homerun, plex will still be allocating the tuner is was using to record from. If I view the plex temporary directory that I assigned it to, the video pieces of the target show are in the folder and the folder keeps growing with video from whatever is playing on the same channel after the “recorded” show ended. It just keeps growing (going on 3 hours of TV for a 30 minute show). The “recording schedule” shows 100% recorded but there is no access to the video in plex and the final processed video is not in the library. The folder just keeps growing (currently at 14gb)…

Update: 1.10.1.4561 seems to work without error though I am not 100% confirmed. Of the 3 shows I recorded last night 2 of them are now properly edited and now in my library. The 3rd show (last recorded at 9 PM is still 100% recorded but not available so it must still be processing? going on 12 hours later…

I am now running about 50/50 on the recording processing correctly. If the transcoding fails the recording is placed correctly in the library but all commercials are still there. The real issue now is that shows will sit in “100% recorded” for up to 24 hours before they appear in the library. This really doesn’t work for the daily news since its literally yesterdays news before I can watch it.
