Android app can no longer connect to Visio TV Chromecast

Server Version#: 1.41.6.9685
Player Version#: versions newer than 10.21.1.1562 (up to and including 2025.14.0)

Issue:

I have a Visio M65-D0 TV, which has a built-in Chromecast. In the past it has always functioned identically to a standalone Chromecast (open an app, click the cast icon, pick the TV as the Chromecast device, play media).

Several recent versions of the Plex Android app can no longer connect to or cast any media to this specific Chromecast. This is not specific to the new Plex Experience - it started happening in a few of the recent classic versions prior to that. The issue does still occur in the new Plex Experience version of the app, but manifests somewhat differently.

Experience in the “Classic” Plex app:

  1. Click Chromecast button
  2. Select Vizio TV Chromecast
  3. The white Chromecast icon will pulse for several seconds, but never “fills in” or turns orange like it did in prior versions.
  4. The Plex logo appears on the TV.
  5. If I attempt to play any media, the app immediately displays an error: “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again”

Experience in the “new” Plex app:

  1. Click Chromecast button
  2. Select Vizio TV Chromecast
  3. The Chromecast button “fills in” and the app appears to be connected.
  4. The Plex logo appears on the TV.
  5. If I attempt to play any media, the phone will show the media screen but stay at 0:00 timestamp and never actually start playing. The TV will continue to just show the Plex logo.

Troubleshooting steps I’ve taken and other background details:

  • Android - clear data and cache for the Plex app, uninstall and reinstall.
  • Vizio TV - soft reboot, reboot by unplugging for several minutes, factory reset.
  • Vizio TV - test casting from other apps - they all work fine.
  • Tested casting to other devices w/ the same Plex app version:
    • Casting to a standalone Chromecast Ultra dongle worked.
    • Casting to a Nest Home Hub (with screen) worked.
    • Only the Vizio’s built-in Chromecast seems to have problems.
  • Tested casting from other devices -
    • My wife’s Pixel 9 Pro and my old Pixel 7 have the same problem.
    • Casting from the web interface to the Vizio TV works.
  • Tested playing content via the Plex app running on the Vizio TV’s own smart interface. This worked.
  • Plex Server - apply server updates, restart Plex, reboot server.
  • Revert to older Plex Android app versions via .apk files available on the forms:
    • Versions 2025.14.0, 10.25.0.2457, 10.23.0.1627 all had the same issue
    • Version 10.21.1.1562 works as expected.

Other details:

  • The Vizio TV has not received any recent software updates
  • I am not running a custom DNS server or DNS based ad blocker
  • I tried exporting logs from both the Android app and the server. I did not see any obvious error messages that looked related to this issue, but can provide these logs if needed.

I’m disappointed that there hasn’t been any kind of response on this… Is there a different place I should be reporting this?

I just joined the beta and tried version 2025.16, which unfortunately has the same issue. For now I’m going to have to revert to 10.21.1.1562 again, as it’s the only way I can use my Plex server/TV at all.

Hey… So you arent the only one. I have the same issue.

0 Response from Plex… If you find a place that gets a response I will gladly join in.

The old app works fine.

I’m having the same problem

I uninstalled and reinstalled version 10.26.0.2578, casting works again. It’s definitely something about how the new app casts that isn’t working properly for “Chromecast built-in” devices, like my Vizio TV.

This is still broken - no updates or improvements in several months now. I still have to use a very old version of the app to have any working Chromecast functionality. It would be great to get some kind of update.

Still broken in 2025.23.0 :frowning:

Still a problem, zero updates or communication. It’s been months guys, come on.
