Still Unable to cast from Android Plex App to Chromecast (after new Experience App update)

Server Version#: 1.41.7.9799
Player Version#: 10.26.0.2578

I understand there are several posts about issues with the new Plex “Experience” Apps but I am not seeing any posts relevant to my issues (which I have been experiencing since the launch of the new app (back in June?)).

I’m not overly happy with the GUI changes but the main issue for me is I use Plex Player App on Android ONLY to cast to my Chromecast device on my television. I don’t watch anything on the phone AT ALL! But I am unable to cast to Chromecast device from my Android phone. As you will see from the versions I am using “old” versions of both the Media Server and Player app. I have tried several times to upgrade after the latest patches which suggest casting is fixed but IT IS NOT! Not for me at least.

This weekend I thought maybe it is my Chromecast device; it is a first gen but does the job for me and works fine with all other applications I use to cast from. So I purchased a new Google Cast (Google TV Streamer 4K). Installed and connected fine using the old version so, for possibly the 20th time, installed the updated/latest version of the Plex Android App via Google store and tried casting. The Plex logo appears on the screen and the app shows as being connected but nothing will play. No error messages, no indication other than the logo.

I am now incredibly frustrated and, with no way to contact Plex Support directly for help I’m reaching out here.

I have a Samsung S24 Ultra currently with the last version of the app that worked (as in first line of this post) casting to a Google TV Streamer 4K (brand new and works fine with the old version of the Plex App) but simply stalls at the logo being presented on screen with the new/latest app.

Is there ANYONE that has gotten Android Chromecast working with the new app? If so can you give me some pointers?

I’m now getting emails from Plex saying I need to upgrade my server but WILL NOT be doing this as it is an easy process to simply roll-back to the old version of the player but I am not wanting to upgrade the Media Server and potentially brick even the old player app from working (I am not a techie so upgrading the Plex Server is fine but downgrading it would cause me a headache PARTICULARLY if this doesn’t actually resolve the issue of casting).

Anyone out there that has/had the same issue that can help?

Thanks in advance!

edit I did find this post in which the post from “michielvanerp“ (June 23) notes that when using the old app, on first usage the user is asked to allow if insecure connections should be allowed but this doesn’t happen in the new app - is this a possible reason?

I know it’s not apples-to-apples, but I performed a quick test with what I have.

Specifically, I have a cheap Walmart onn 4K device (the $20 one from years ago) and an Android-based tablet running the new experience app, version 2025.23.0. The onn device has built-in Chromecast functionality and is running Android TV 14.

The short version is that I’m able to cast from my tablet to the onn device with no issues. The onn device is pretty similar in function to a Google TV with Chromecast.

So nothing terribly interesting here, I just wanted to provide a working case in case it helps to better understand the problem.

I have a very similar issue. I haven’t been able to cast to my main TV (Vizio TV with an integrate Chromecast) since slightly before the new Plex experience versions of the app. I’ve had to downgrade all the way back to the 10.21 version of the Android app in order to be able to cast again. I made a post back in May about this issue, but it’s received no attention whatsoever from Plex support.

I’ve tried every new release of the app (including the “new experience” versions) since then hoping that one of them would eventually fix this issue, but so far all of them have been the same.

The only resolution I know that has worked for some people is:

  1. Make sure all involved devices (phone, tv, plex server) are using Google’s DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).
  2. If your router has a setting for DNS Rebinding protection, disable it, or add an exception for “plex.direct”

If your problem is specifically related to secure connections, the above may fix the issue for you. In my case though it didn’t - secure connections work fine for me in the old app versions and I’ve done testing to rule out DNS/DNS Rebind issues and still can’t cast.

Hmm… Well I just installed the latest version (released 19th Aug - Plex for Android 2025.23.0) and also cleared Plex Cache and Data from Android Settings (Settings → Apps → Plex → Storage), logged back in and… rather remarkably, was able to cast to my Google TV. Nothing in the patch notes suggest a fix for this issue so perhaps it was just the clearing cache and data (which I had tried a while ago but maybe not with some of the more recent patches). Anyway, this looks ok to me at the moment.

I’ll give it a few days of testing then will report back… If all good I may even brave updating the PMS too… :S

Hope you folks all have some success with this latest update (or deleting cache/data)

edit 20/08/2025 So far so good. Interestingly enough casting now brings up the actual Plex GUI (this may be a Google TV thing). Will give it another couple of days checking but my issue (at least) seems to be resolved from the Delete Cache/Data of the Plex App and installing latest version

No such luck for me unfortunately - tried 2025.23.0 this morning. Cleared cache and storage and logged back in. Trying to cast to my Vizio TV Chromecast still just produces a Plex logo that sits there forever.

Damn… That really sucks. Sorry to hear that :frowning: Really hope Plex sort it out. I’m already half way to getting jellyfin installed - hitting a few snags with transcoding but will move there as soon as I’m up and running. Not optimistic with Plex’s long term goals for home users that want to watch their own content and not be forced with streaming services. Very disappointed after years of being a lifetime plexpass user… Wishing you good luck!
