Android app totally broken for music & sync

Server Version#: 1.22.0.4163
Player Version#: 8.14.1.23548

I’ve run everything up to date and maintained this server for a long time with all standard/stock settings.

My issue is twofold…

I cannot get through more than two or three songs of any album from any artist without the music stopping inexplicably. Sometimes it just stops for a while, then continues… other times it cannot be played again until I reboot the app no matter how many times I frustratingly hit the pause/play button.

In order to rectify this, I thought syncing some music might help me. Data is no concern to me, but I feel like having to sync in my case sort of defeats the point of paying for a streaming app like this. I was subbed for years and now I own the lifetime plex pass… All that paying and the syncing doesn’t work either. I set about 500 songs to sync over wifi, and maybe a few albums said they were done syncing but if I go into the album there are no actual songs there. I cannot play any synced music. I can see on the server side that the syncs are still queued up and most are “waiting to download”… waiting for what, I don’t know.

PLEASE help. I paid for this. Very frustrated customer.

The things you sync are not available until the entire sync job is done. With 500 songs, this may take a while. Keep in mind that although you are doing this from Web, the Android device still needs to process the sync job and depending on your device, that 500 songs could potentially cause your device to run out of memory and then the sync job could fail.

I’m not able to reproduce this issue. I can play for hours without any issues. You’ll need to reproduce and then grab the logs from your server and the android app after the playback stops.

But… there are other forums posts with people having the same issue…

And if the sync job “isn’t done” after a few days… there is still a problem with plex and not with me. I have more than enough space for the songs I’ve synced.

I’ll do what you ask. I’m completely out of options and out of pocket here.

The attached screenshot… it shows my sync from the server side. Its been like that for days. No change at all. My device has plenty of free space and there doesn’t seem to be anything I can do about it except to cancel. There is no progress, and the sync page stays like that.

How do I ensure I’ll have logs for the moment I experience a problem? Things still aren’t syncing and I could tell you the time on Saturday when I had the problem.

Plex Media Server.1.log (33.1 KB) Plex Media Server.2.log (141.4 KB) Plex Media Server.3.log (15.4 KB) Plex Media Server.4.log (85.4 KB) Plex Media Server.5.log (16.2 KB)

Here are logs containing timestamps from when I experienced playback issues while riding my motorcycle. I was in a heavily populated downtown area of Toronto and definitely did not experience any network trouble as there would have been ample coverage. Playback has often stopped for me under wifi or mobile network. Basically, it never works.

Have a look at the 20th, between 10:28pm-11:12pm.

Hope this helps. I’m perplexed.

Those are the wrong logs. For the Android logs I need the one that start with “client”. For server logs, I need the one from your server.

There aren’t any logs I’m able to send from my phone that start with “client”. Where would I find them in the app?

Oh sorry, not client. I was thinking of something else. Android logs start with “com”. It’s just easier if you get me the entire zip file. Android, Android TV, Fire TV Logs | Plex Support

Regarding the music just stopping after a few songs, this has become a known issue it seems with Android, although for several different root causes. I have a Samsung Galaxy S9. The issue I had was the fact that my app would “go to sleep” due to the battery management that is automatically applied when you install an app. I also had a problem with caching. I had to do a few things and it pretty much fixed the issue. Try these out. It may not be the cause of the problem you are having, but figured I’d throw it out there. I still randomly have issues with only a few songs playing., but I found that is only the case if I keep the song “open” when I close out the app (not 100% of the time, but every so often).

Go to Settings > Apps > (top right) Special Access > Optimize battery usage > Plex > Turn the “switch” off (to the left).

This will make sure Plex never goes to sleep and will continue to stream when your phone is locked.

Also, for some reason, my device access was screwed up; even though I allowed access to storage, it was denied. I notice that Plex Android seems to prefer locally cached songs over “streamed” (meaning, when you stream a song, it is cached to your phone and for some reason, my plex player always prefers the cached version if I play that song again).

Go to Settings > Apps > Plex > Permissions > Storage > Allow

Hopefully this is helpful.

Looks like Sync is stuck at 63.7%. Can you hit the refresh button in the app on the Sync page, wait 1 minute, then get me a new app log.

Thanks for this solution, re: Android app special access > optimize battery setting. Can confirm this was the solution. Android setting, not Plex.

Thanks everyone for the replies on this. I’ve made all the suggested changes, and was able to sync my music. I don’t know why it originally stopped, though.

I haven’t had the time to test whether my issue has resolved or not… Life is crazy, especially during these times… But again, you’re all great for offering support.

Will update again later.

Go to Settings > Apps > (top right) Special Access > Optimize battery usage > Plex > Turn the “switch” off (to the left).

I can confirm that this has fixed the problem for me as well. I’ve been having the same issue for many months, possibly more than a year with my Samsung Galaxy S9. Audio would inexplicably quit playing after a couple songs, regardless of if I was streaming over cellular, wifi, or playing from locally-synced files.

Thanks a lot.
