Android Plex App Won't Play Movies - App Restarts After 4-5 seconds

I’ve only noticed this for a few days as I don’t often play movies on my phone, and not watched a movie on my Shield Pro for over a week.

Both my Google Pixel 7 Pro and Shield Pro are running 9.29.0.3280 and they both have the same issue;
If I try to play any MOVIE, after 4-5 seconds, Plex will crash put and restart itself.
I’ve tried movies I have watched recently and have worked - they don’t now.
I’ve tried SD, 720p, 1080p and 4K - with and without transcoding
Same issue. If I play a movie and pause it straight away, it crashes still.

If I play a TV SHOW it plays fine.

I have no issues playing it on an Amazon Firestick 4K Max with the same software version.
I have no issues playing a movie via Chrome on my phone.
I have no issues playing a movie via a browser on a laptop.
I have no issues playing a movie on a PS5 or Xbox Series X.

Looking on the server, the logs are not showing the crash so I am assuming it is client side.

Anyone have any ideas?

Having the same issue on Shield Pro and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

You have to leave the Plex Beta program and install the standard release or Plex to fix it.

I’ve been seeing the same issue with 4K Movies specifically on Shield 2017 and Pixel 6. Left the beta program and installed stable, still seeing the issue.

Edit: the Shield is no longer seeing this issue, but the Pixel still is.

The issue is now on the PUBLIC Plex build.

Plex, please fix this ASAP.

Every movie file causes Plex to crash. No logs on the server to give an error. Previously fixed by leaving the beta program and reinstalling. Now public has the issue.

This isn’t good enough

Can confirm:

4k video files are crashing the official Android Plex app on both Shield Pro 2019 and Pixel 6a. Playing through a web browser does not fail. Does not crash on iPad 6th gen.

Same here Plex app freezes on Samsung Galaxy A14 Android.
