Android Plex Doesn't Load Movies if in a Collection

Server Version#: 1.41.3.9314
Player Version#: 2025.20.0 (retested)

  1. Restart Phone.
  2. Start Plex
  3. Open movie (not in a collection)
  4. No problem. Repeat x6. No issues
  5. Open movie in a collection
  6. ISSUE: Blank screen, and won’t load movie. Get error mesage of

“Sorry, that didn’t work. Check that “SERVER” is available and try again”

  1. The same film has no issue loading on TV, desktop, etc. Can play without issue. The server is absolutely available since it is literally streaming to my TV at the same time Android mobile is giving me an error.

This feels completely broken. I have tested this on 20 different items with the same result. I only have 9 collections on this library, but one of them is an 'IMDB Top 250" collection, so basically none of the ‘top’ movies will play on my phone.

Again, no issue on desktop or TV. Very frustrating since this never happened in prior Android apps.

EDIT: Installed an apk of the older version of Plex app. Absolutely no issue. Everything loads lightning quick. Total incompetence from the Plex team to break a basic feature for no reason. I shouldn’t have to turn off app updates in Play store just to use Plex.

I’m not able to recreate this issue on my Android phone. I am running 2025.18.0. Maybe try updating the app and check again.

It did take about 5-10 seconds to open the page the first time. My guess is it’s generating all the images, but the second time onwards the page loads quick.

Mine is doing the same exact thing… Its so annoying. I have all my workout videos in collections. So they don’t even ever play. I’ve noticed that if the video is even in a collection, I can’t even individually go to the file. Just a blank screen…

Same for my movies. If a movie is in a collection, it shows that image banner if the movie, but then there is just a spinning circle that eventually errors out…

This is exactly what is happening for me.

I do not, but I do have many collections that spans multiple libraries, which I think is the root cause.

My structure is simply:
media/movies-4k/
media/movies/

Some collections span both these libraries so results pull in from both libraries when browsing, eg: imdb top 250 collection. Maybe it is the spanning collections that is causing this bug - still present on latest 2025.20 for me.

Same issue Here… On Android Phone and Android Tablet… Wtf?!

And every collection is empty If I click on that.

Some dev should leave a comment about that…

I’m still having issues with items in Collections in latest 2025.21 app on Android.

Feel like I’m yelling into the void here. No official requests for logs, no acknowledgement this is an issue… I’m not the only person with this issue. I’ve read comments on reddit and this forum that there are multiple users who are experiencing a bug here.

Collections are a huge part of Plex and I have many items tagged with them. As it stands right now, I basically have a 50%+ chance of something not loading on my phone if I click it.

Again, there is no issue when I try to open up these items on AndroidTV, Kodi, or even the older version of the Plex app on my phone.

I have 2x issues:

  1. Items in manual collections just don’t load; items in smart collections still do load. If I tag an item with ‘imdb Top 250’ or ‘Harry Potter Collection’, that item just doesn’t load. An item in a smart collection will still load.

  2. No ‘Collection’, smart or manual, will open up on my phone with 2025.21. I navigate to a library, click the ‘Collections’ tab, and any collection I open will just black screen with an ‘Uh Oh… Something’s Not Right’ error. This is after restarting my phone.

Basically I’ve resigned myself to not having a Plex app on my phone period. I tried running the old Plex app full-time, which works perfectly, but I have to turn off all app updates which isn’t secure or convenient.

Honestly at my wits end with this, the experience on my phone is just horrid.

I have exact the same issues! So this is definitely a bug!

Not a dev, but I’m running 2015.21 and my collections work fine. The app does request posters from your sever to download. If something goes wrong, that could prevent the page from loading. If you can provide logs after trying to view the collection, i can check for errors.

Glad it works for you, but it doesn’t for many others… please don’t minimize the issue.

Obviously bugs don’t affect everyone… I’m sure there are people where collections are working fine. But it is certainly impacting many people. Because our setups are different: size of library, number of libraries, number of collections, smart vs manual collections, collections that span libraries, etc.

The app does request posters from your sever to download. If something goes wrong, that could prevent the page from loading.

The app and collections works fine on every platform I’ve tried it on, including the old Android Plex app.

It doesn’t on the new Plex app after phone restarts, etc. Those are the facts for me.

EDIT: I also have ChuckPa’s ‘PlexDBRepair’ running every week ensuring database integrity. There is nothing wrong with my db’s for extra verification.

I can totally confirm!

No? Just disable Auto Update for the Plex App.

I have a incredible better idea… plex should just fix this…

Understood, that’s why i asked to see your logs so the bug can be identified. Just saying something doesn’t work isn’t enough info to get it fixed.

This issue is present with TV shows as well. The show’s page will not load, but the same show’s season and episode pages will load fine. A show/movie alone in a collection without any same-named collections in another library will not load, but removing it from the collection will let it load fine. This issue has been present since the first version of the New Experience. I created a new library with a single directory and a single show, then added it to a collection and it would not load on mobile. Removing it from the collection made it work. It does not seem to be linked to the number of directories in a library, though it could be linked to searching other libraries for a similar collection as I have not tested a fresh install of Plex that has only one library.

Doesn’t work on 2025.27.0 either

This is like… absurd right?

Like I know this problem doesn’t happen to everyone. But it clearly is a bug.

I’m still using the last release before the ‘New Experience’, and everything works as it should.
