I just wanted to provide some quick feedback on the new beta release on my 2019 Shield Pro. I’ll grab logs as soon as I have some time.
-Live TV fails to start playback. This occurs whether or not I’m using the new player, though it appears the new player isn’t used for live tv based on the UI controls.
-Enabling subtitles from HDHomeRun Prime (Cable TV) recordings crashes playback in both the old and new players
-With both the new player and resolution switching enabled, attempting to play an MKV h.264 1080p video caused the display to go blank, and required a hard power cycle of my Shield to recover picture
-The switch resolution option only shows up once you select the new player, leave the settings menu, and go back into the settings menu. Same thing with disabling the new player. switch resolution only disappears after you disable the new player, exit the settings menu, and go back in
I am also having a weird issue when watching ASS anime that’s HEVC. It sometimes direct plays the ASS subs and then fails to load. Other times it transcodes it and it works as expected.
Here are the server and app logs. Approximate time and description of the bug as follows:
18:43: Attempt to start Live TV playback. App displays “Playback has stopped because the connection to the plex media server has been lost. please ensure the server is available and retry.”
18:45: subtitles enabled on 1080i MP2TS recording. “Playback has stopped becasue the connection to the plex media server has been lost. Please ensure the server is available and retry”
18:47. playback of 1080p h.264 DTS-MA MKV file with match refresh rate and match resolution on. playback never starts (via server dashboard) and display goes black. Shield had to be hard power cycled to recover
Is there anyway to bring up movie synopsis while the movies playing like on apple tv? It is not practical to leave the movie every time i want to see the synopsis and movie information. Mrmc on shield also lets you see movie information in the player.
Also not going to bother with it much but that minimize video button still confuses me and if you accidentally hit it with the new player and go back to the shield menu to maximize you encounter issues with the new player where you get a black screen, but i would rather that thing either be removed or an easier way to maximize the video, the entire button really confuses me and why you have to jump through hoops to maximize the video again.
Oh and if you continue a movie the chapter selection does not match up, seems to default to the 2nd chapter. So if i launch plex, continue watching lets say an hour into the movie, bring up the chapters, the chapter selection is on the 2nd chapter, even though we are on the 10th chapter for example.
If you select a chapter though from the chapter selection menu, it aligns properly when you bring up the chapter menu again. But if you continue a movie from the synopsis page, it seems to show you are always on the 2nd chapter even if you are not.
Thanks for reporting this is a known issue where the chapter or PQ item that is currently playing wont show by default.
The picture in picture button will have a shortcut on the home screen of Plex to get you back into the fullscreen player. The functionality as it currently stands is like the existing player (though the button is bigger).
Will pass on the feedback for having easier access to subtitles and more movie information inside the player.
Any chance you were able to look into the live TV playback issue yet? Seems to be a pretty major regression, and would be quite problematic if it sticks around when 7.24 goes public release
I am wondering what is the purpose of a menu on the left side (gear) and another menu on the right side (three dots) ?
rather confusing.
also I suggest that player controls should be fairly consistent throught all clients, so if this is going to be the new player UI going forward, along with the subtitles button, please put the audio button on the main player.
also, perhaps the videos I watched did not have chapters, but where are is the chapter navigation?
ideally we should have chapters thumbnails below (down button) from the main player window.
then the playlist thumbs should be another level down below chapters.
Only issue I’ve encountered so far is the stop command on my shield no longer seems to stop the file currently playing. This behavior would normally take me back to the episode unselected to play, but now pressing stop simply pauses playback.
One other note on the new player, if im watching a movie and hit back and go out of the plex app, the shield main screen shows a 1 in the top right like a notifcation, if i go to it, it appears like the movie is still playing and I have to hit stop. It should be stopped right when i hit back and exit the movie. Its like its still playing in the background on the shield quite often. The odd time it wont be, but most of the time its like its not exiting/closing the new player properly.
I also dont know how others feel but I hate the giant fan art wallpaper view when I click on a movie, I like the apple tv plex implementation. Often fanart you scrape can sometimes be low quality, and blown up on a tv as a full size background in movie and tv view’s can look bad for some scrapped images.
Live TV issues are being investigated as a priority and will be fixed before v7.24 goes public. As a temporary workaround, you can lower the quality in the player or in the Plex settings and smooth Live TV will be restored.
