Android TV 9, Plex not working anymore

Since yesterday morning when I upgraded my Xiaomi Mi Box 4 to AndroidTV 9 (Kernel 4.9.113) I haven’t been able to play anything in Plex.

Live TV stops and is stuck at the still image after a few seconds and movies and other videos simply won’t start. It says that connection is lost (For the videos), but that’s not true, today I also bought a USB adapter to try cabled network, same problem and it’s connected to the same network as the server in the same router, so it can’t be due to the network.

Server Version#: 1.18.4.2171
Player Version#: 7.26.0.14578

Same issue here, update to AndroidTV 9, nothing will start. Works fine on all other devices.

Works fine with Kodi and Plex for Kodi add-on.

Peilof, does this mean I can install Kodi on my AndroidTV and use that or?

I can use Plex with no problem on my computers and phone as well… Only the Android TV

Yes, as a work-around until Plex update the app to function with 9. I hope/think they will.

Same issue. The only way I got it to work is to, when playing something, go to settings, force a transcode to “maximum quality”. This should get your media started, then go again in settings and put it back to direct play, then it will play fine.

For me (live tv) it seems the transcode is ignored as it’s always goes back to Play Original, however it does start the video again, but I have to do it twice per minute.

Does anyone know if this been fixed?

Still not working for me!?

Plex Android TV app not playing videos? Disabling this setting may fix it…

  1. Open the Plex app on your Android TV device
  2. Navigate to and click on your login name on the left side of the screen
  3. Select settings
  4. Scroll down to Advanced
  5. Scroll to the right until you see the Enable new video player setting
  6. Click it and turn it off

Unfortunately, if you update the app, it will likely re-enable so you’ll have to disable it again if you have issues. The good news is you know how to easily find it to fix Plex Android TV playback issues. After you’ve disabled it, the first time you go to play a video, you will get a popup asking if you want to enable it. Obviously, you don’t want to so select that option and you’ll be on your way.

Thanks for this “fix”. It worked just great.
So I guess this is a Plex issue rather than a Mi Box or AndroidTV 9 issue?

Hi, sorry to hear about the problems with the app and the recent Mi Box update. Is there any chance you could provide app logs following https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201573117-Android-and-GoogleTV-Logs ?
Thanks in advance

Thanks The fix has worked fine on the MIBOX

:grinning: :innocent:

That is not a fix but a workaround. One of you should rather provide logs because the old player will be gone at some point.

As discussed above media won’t play since updating to Android TV 9. If you turn OFF enable new video player, then the videos will play.

Attached logs with ‘Enable new video player’ turned on.

Yeah the “work-around” works, however I am hoping for an update that will fix this problem since I am also experiencing a problem with the old player like audio suddenly dropping having to restart the video and unable to scroll through the movie. I only commented so that this problem would be fix as soon as possible because its a major issue as to not be able to play videos in a video oriented platform.

thank you!!! working in Mi Box S 4K
