App on Android TV and Fire stick run once

Server Version#: 1.16.3.1402
Player Version#: 7.19.2.11789

As of 8/6/19 all client apps were working as expected. The server was at version: 1.15.3.876.
I updated to the latest server version as of 8/12/19.

I have a 2018 Sony Bravia Model: XBR65X900F. Android version: 7

Issue: Plex app loaded slow the first time, watched a show, went to Youtube app, then back to Plex app. Plex app went to grey screen for about 15 seconds, then died and the TV went to main TV menu. Tried Plex again, same result… grey screen, dies, back to main TV menu.

I uninstalled the application, went thru the normal setup, ran the app for the first time after install… It runs slow but fine the first time then it repeats the grey screen and die the second (and 3rd, 4th, 5th) time you start the app. And I tried reinstalling multiple times.

So I plugged in my Fire-TVstick into the same TV. It ran Plex fine for a day. Then the next day the application updated (I think, I think that because the GUI is different) to the latest version and now I have the same problem on the Fire-TVstick… grey screen and die.

I can access the server from my LG8 (Android v8) via the Plex app without issue. But I would rather watch shows on the 65" TV over the 8" phone screen.

I can also run the Plex app from my Lenovo lablet (running Plex version: 7.19.2.11789)

Anyone run into this issue lately? Is there a fix?

Same thing here on new FireTV stick 4k and using Vizio 4K TV. Also have older 1080 TV with Firestick that does same thing i.e. grey screen after working for 1st time only after installation so it’s not the TV. It’s the new hub interface that’s buggy I attached to TV using ADB debugger and shows high cpu usage by Plex app probably causing crash. Anyways, after installing/reinstalling seem to have it working now by removing everything except a few libraries from home screen. I have like over 30 libraries so I’m guessing the app just can’t handle it. Anyways FWIW Plex app on Apple TV 4k runs fine without crashing. Can’t believe more people haven’t noticed this though there was a note in the Android app about last update fixing a crash with Tidal or something?

I hadn’t thought about reducing the libraries. I have at least 40. I’ll try that this evening since I know I’ll have to reinstall it anyway.

Thanks for the tip. Now it’s time for Plex to fix the issue in this release. It worked fine with the same number of libraries in the last release.

Yeah they really need to optimize the new UI for Android TV. Still working fine on both my Android firesticks after reducing and removing most my libraries from sidebar. Even with the few I did keep around 10 still noticably slow to load even those but at least it’s working for now! Still an end user shouldn’t have to resort to this and most will never figure it out or wait till they release a newer optimized version or maybe we just have way bigger libraries than like 99% of Plex users LOL https://support.plex.tv/articles/navigating-the-big-screen-apps/

p.s. Another factor that might be seeing it on my firesticks and not Apple TV is that ATV has 2x the RAM and is connected via ethernet so firesticks just can’t keep up via wireless or RAM is concerned. Doubt it though since able to stream 4K stuff just fine via Firesticks when they are working without stuttering or wifi drops so most likely buggy new UI interface.

I just want to chime in that I am having the same issue. But I also have many libraries. How many libraries is typical? I am beginning to think I need to group these movies into very few libraries.

The tip to reduce the number of libraries worked for me too. But this is not a fix, at best it’s a bandaid.

How do we yell loud enough that Plex Support hears us?

Yeah and got it to crash again today just by adding 1 additional library to sidebar area :frowning:

Looks like they fixed it in latest version for FireTV. Was able to reset main screen hub back to defaults and not have it constantly crash
