App.plex.tv is unable to connect securely

Server Version#: Version 1.23.5.4841
Player Version#: Edge Browser

I’m seeing this thread over and over. Plex Server running on OMV5. Working great for years. Remote access green.

Connecting to my Plex Server via the https://app.plex.tv/desktop site cannot connect securely. Exclamation Points all over the place.

LocalHost sees all media fine.
Android App works fine.
Roku works fine (last I checked).

I’m going to guess that something in the Plex hosted environment changed to a higher standard of security and things that used to work no longer work. I’ve never had to purchase any certificates for this to work.

Would love for Plex to acknowledge that there’s something going on and that they’re working on it.

Plex DNS was down on Sunday. Let’s Encrypt was down yesterday.

The whole system / mechanism is still heaving from everything being whacked offline for several hours twice in as many days.

Certificate can be reset if needed.

Logs need to be provided which capture what’s happening.

What certificate can I reset? I’ve installed no certs.

I’m happy to download logs and post them - but what exactly would we learn if this is a system wide issue?

Do you have a hosted certificate for each user? That doesn’t seem possible. I’m seeing other threads where you and your teammates are resetting hosted certificates for members which resolves the issue. Do you need my logs to determine my hosted certificate? Does it help if I’m a PlexPass member?

Thanks in advance.

There is a master Plex.tv certificate.
There is a secondary Plex.tv-generated certificate for each server.

The logs will tell me if the server is rate-limited (HTTP 429) in attempting to talk to Plex.tv. In those cases, I reset the certificate & server to clear the error state.

In looking at your servers, one of them hasn’t been seen in a while and the other has a current certificate. If that machine has issues, i will reset.

Yes - please reset the most current cert for the most current server.

The server that hasn’t been seen in a while was decommissioned. You can remove that if you like.

Thanks for explaining this to me. I now realize there is a bit on the back end going on.

@bethesdaadk

I have reset the certificate.
Please restart PMS and report back.

Sorry to report no change. Still unable to connect to my local shares.

if I web to the localhost - no problem. But via the cloud - yellow triangle with exclamation point.

Next steps?

Show me please?
Also please provide the logs ZIP file (make it fail again then download the logs)

I suspect your remote access is not working.

I’m seeing the same problem trying to connect to two different servers. Edge browser.

Plex Roku App and Plex Windows Desktop App work fine.

@Kilgry

I ask the OP to show me .

“Me too” is nothing actionable.

Sorry to be a bother then, but for more information my Plex web just started connecting properly after not working for the past couple days.

All good on my end now. Hopefully for others too.

Remote access is all green and good. Always has been.

Roku, Samsung, Android (on data plan - not wifi) can all access my Plex Media Server. Even the Windows Client, which I just downloaded, works on the very same PC as the browser that doesn’t work.

Only the browser version didn’t work. Until about 60 seconds ago. And now it’s working.

We’re starting to suspect a whole bunch of DNS caching somewhere which “Just did NOT work”. We have ideas but no supporting evidence.

Quick question:

what do the following queries return?

nslookup plex.direct # hide your WAN IP if that’s in the result
nslookup plex.tv

I’m looking for addresses and errors returned

Step 2 –

a. Flush DNS Cache
b. Repeat both queries

Results should be the same & valid.

Just to jump into this, I am still unable to access my server via web - apps work fine. Getting the “App.plex.tv is unable to connect to “XXXXXX” securely” message on all devices…

I’m getting the same message today.

unless you have a specific reason not to, I would try changing your DNS to Googles or cloudfares

OK - thx. That actually works but I have used Verisign for years… Why suddenly a problem for Plex servers? My logs say that this has been going on for awhile…

And in case this may help others, I discovered that other DNS vendors may have problems if you have DNS rebind protection turned on… Verisign works as long as that is off - apparently due to problems resolving queries to non-routable addresses…

Can my certificates please be reset as well? I seem to be experiencing the same issue.
