Trying out the new changes with LG C9 / Sonos Arc / Apple TV 4K (2022) WiFi + Ethernet 128GB. Tried with wifi and ethernet and both Chroma 4:4:4 and 4:2:0 just to be sure.
In 8.14 the a/v sync was always slightly off (audio ahead of video) with FRM on. When FRM was off the a/v sync was fine. Tried the same files as before and the result appears to be the same across the board…
I also tried out the test file mentioned above and the sound starts at -2.
If you’re having issues with the old player, that’s entirely out of our control. That’s Apple’s native AVPlayer, which we can’t do anything with. We just give it the video and audio, and off it goes. We can only control things in the new player.
Seeing definite improvement since the recent additional changes. Tested a known problematic file (1080p AC3 5.1) and while it’s still slightly off, it’s very much improved. Will keep testing…
I tested it out on two TVs, both with AppleTV 4K (2022), match frame rate is turned ON on both.
1 - LG C7 - connected to Sennheiser Ambeo, AppleTV connected directly to soundbar. Audio is still a bit ahead of video, but is definitely much better. Mostly noticeable with plosives like “p” or “k” sounds.
2 - Samsung 32" 4K TV - AppleTV is connected directly to TV — sync looks right.
Question: where do you find the LG Match Screen and Sound BYPASS setting? I have an LG CX (few years old), and am wondering if it’s just not something available on my TV/ Thanks!
Both my AppleTV 4K (one is a 2022 and the other is a 2021) are hooked up to LG OLED and a receiver and both show great improvement so far. A couple times the audio sync looks ever so slightly off, but that also may be the source at this point. It was a lot more obvious before. I’ll post again if it changes.
I did some more testing today for the following cases:
Old player, match frame rate ON
Old player, match frame rate OFF
New player, match frame rate ON
New player, match frame rate OFF
I tested both 1080p and 4K content and while there was still audio lag in all cases, I found the following:
In general, the OLD player has less audio lag than the NEW player
Turning match frame rate OFF seems to reduce the audio lag slightly in the OLD player, but doesn’t have much effect in the NEW player
I bring up the old player not with the expectation that something will be fixed there, but to express that there seems to be some kind of processing going on within Plex affecting both players that is causing audio delay on playback that isn’t present in other Apple TV apps (I tested Netflix, Amazon, and iTunes).
For reference the Apple TV is connected through a Denon AVR-X3800H connected to a Sony A95K TV through the eARC input set to Enhanced (Dolby Vision). Auto Lip Sync on the receiver doesn’t seem to have an effect either way (I’ve tested with it both on and off).
Everything else running through the receiver (cable box, BD player, UHD player) have no problems at all, and as mentioned other Apple TV apps seem to be unaffected. It’s just Plex, and just on video playback (UI sounds are not affected).
That’s not how it works. The old player simply passes the file to Apple’s built-in player if it’s within a narrow set of specifications or it’s transcoded at the Plex server to meet one of those specifications so again it can be handed off to the built-in player.
The new player is like Infuse in that it’s doing the decoding on the Apple TV itself within the Plex Player app (unfortunately this includes decoding the audio as Apple doesn’t provide an API for audio pass-thru and this appears to be part of the problem). So far though, despite the recent improvements, Infuse does a better job of this than the Plex app itself.
Thanks, I just checked it out. Looks like the CX doesn’t offer a Match Screen and Sound option. Best I could find was an Advanced A/V Sync option that allows me to adjust delay to the HDMI ARC port, and a “Bypass” switch which is off. Need to research what Bypass actually does and whether it makes sense to toggle on with all of the AppleTV/Plex sync issues we’re experimenting with.
@DaveBinM
I’ve got the similar opinion as ShaGe (…Ge is for GENOVA??)
I’ve verified it by 3 different tests and I can say as following:
AppleTv plugged on Yamaha AVR the AVlipSync is still present but better than before. Now Audio is early between 30/20 ms
If AppleTv is plugged to TV directly audio is early between 20/10 ms
*EDIT. I just watched a file 4k with Ac3 5.1 file and Audio Sync Issue was terrible!!! I’ve had to plug again to Tv directly… now playback works better!!
So… NO SOLUTION FOR AVR!!
Match frame rate is turned ON
Plex Ver. 8.15
YAMAHA RX-V4A
LG 77C15LA
Like many others, I too have this issue. Roku R635 with an Apple TV 4K second gen. Was really bad with a 1080p HEVC file using 5.1. File was 30hz. Similar issue with a 24p 4k HDR file with 5.1 audio. Match frame rate is on
I took some time to test the new option (enabled at distance by DaveBinM). On my LG C1 directly connected to my ATV 4K 2023, I still had issues, until I disabled the bypass option ( Audio > Advanced Settings > Match Screen and Sound > Bypass ) that I had to enable before. Now it is much better, even though I still feel like I notice a small delay on 4K files (AC3, EAC3, DTS), for 1080p files, it seems to be in sync.
LG C1:
Bypass TV A/V sync OFF
HDMI audio bitstream ON
The audio has to get decoded, you cannot hear digital signals. Digital encoded bitsreams are not audible.
The AppleTV outputs LPCM, lossless. If it doesn’t do the decoding here, you have to have something do it, receiver? Doesn’t much matter since it’s lossless.
No app from netflix, to youtube, to peacock, to channels, to infuse has any audio sync issues. Just Plex right now. It’s in their software.
So I went through my c9 settings again when I noticed that Real Cinema was turned on. After turning it off I instantly noticed a big improvement with FRM turned on. There is still a very slight delay but there is finally light at the end of the tunnel.
I tried infuse but it was much harder to move around in, and I felt was much more poorly organized. Finally, all of the data I had edited for collections and sort orders were not carried over. I dumped it. Not really sure I want to go back. May be easier to buy a new receiver that is eARC compatible so I can use the LG Plex app instead (ARC has audio limitations and that’s all my current receiver can handle)
Yep agreed not as good as plex but you grt used to it. If all else fails use Plex to navigate, start something and continue in infuse so everything just works.
That’s weird, all my custom sort orders for movies and TV + collections carried over just fine. On initial setup you do have to make a few settings adjustments to get everything the way you want it though. But after that navigation is fairly simple. What did you have trouble navigating?
One thing Infuse allows which Plex doesn’t is for you to combine all your different Movie and TV libraries into one section making navigation a lot simpler. Some may not like that but I’ve found it to be a great addition.
And infuse now have Audio Sync controls built into the App so if you ever have issues you can manually adjust it yourself. Any UI shortcomings Infuse may have I can deal with because playback and all the things that matter are just far superior to any Plex app I’ve used across many devices unfortunately. I’d say give it another shot!
Yep I also I wish Infuse supported music and extras as well. But besides that infuse plays everything so well it’s hard to go back to the native plex app.
