Apple TV app - no internet connection

Hi all - I have a Synology DiskStation DS218+ running Plex Server 1.18.7.2457. I also have multiple Apple TV (1080p and 4K) running the latest version of tvOS and the latest version of the Plex app.

I live in a (very) rural location, and we rely on a wireless link for external internet access. It’s fast when it works but it is unreliable and it’s not uncommon to go a day or so with no internet access. Before we moved here I bought a Plex Pass and loaded up the Synology with content so that when our connection died we’d still have a library of content to watch.

Fast forward to an outage and cue my disappointment when the Apple TV app basically became completely non functional because of the lack of internet connection, despite being on the same local network as the Synology.

Am I missing something? I’ve trawled for solutions and potential problems, but this seems like a glaring hole in a local media setup.
