Apple TV + HomePods: Audio drops

Hi everyone,

I’m using Plex on an Apple TV with HomePods as the audio output.

When I use the normal audio player/engine, the audio cuts out completely after a few minutes. The only way to get sound back is to restart the Plex app, but then the same thing happens again after a short time.

Because of that, I’m currently using the old audio player / “Old Audio Engine” in Plex. With that enabled the audio stays, but:

  • When I press Stop, the audio continues for a few seconds.

  • When I start the movie again, the audio needs a few seconds to sync.

Has anyone else seen this, and is there a fix?

Insane that this still isn’t fixed, it’s been a year+ at this point. I have the same issues and have almost given up on plex entirely at this point

Hello,
same issue for me here. bought the homepod specialy to watch my plex library.
obviously, apple won’t take them back :-/

This issue exists from the beginning. You can’t fix it, and Plex won’t fix it too. The only way is to use infuse or sell HomePods.

Why will plex not fix it? I would get rid of plex before selling all my HomePods and Apple TVs tbh

Because they dont care about 1% of the total users, which has homepods. And im sure that paid percentage is even less

It’s possibly fixed in the new plex experience app…but no one knows because it’s been in BETA for forever and there have been no app updates to the Apple TV app in almost a year because the Plex team refuses to fix anything.

I don’t believe it’s specific to HomePods so much as it’s specific to Airplay devices, but I could be mistaken. I don’t have any other airplay devices to test with but a few times over the last few days I get a “cannot play to airplay device” or some other popup and one of my paired homepods stop playing.

same issues not sure why it’s not fixed. Definitely a plex problem, all other apps are fine
