[Apple TV] Not available outside your network

I cannot seem to be able to make a network connection for remote access. I have contacted my router’s customer support to help me set up port forwarding and I’m pretty sure i’ve done it correctly now but still nothing happens. The thing is, despite the Remote Access tab saying “Not available outside your network” it does work but the quality is horrible.

Whenever I try to watch a movie the Apple TV player suddenly converts it automatically to 720p but feels more like 320p and doesn’t let me change it to original quality when I swipe down and go into Playback Settings. The option is there but when I press it nothing happens. It’s been like this for about a month now and I’m getting tired of using Plex when I can’t watch anything in proper quality. Before you suggest that this is probably the internet connection let me just preface that by informing you that according to speedtest.net my upload and download speeds are both around 800 mbps.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. I’m not that tech savvy so please if you can help try and make the instructions a bit idiot proof.

Sounds like either your remote connection goes through a gateway or you have setup a server side quality restriction for remote playback…

If you play a video on the Apple TV… can you open Plex Web in parallel and check out the Activities section (Dashboard / Now Playing)? This should tell you if the connection is remote or indirect (where indirect means the communication goes through a Plex Relay and is therefore limited to 1Mbit/s (2 Mbit/s for Plex Pass users).
For the communication to fall-back to a relay this usually implies there’s something wrong with the remote access configuration (where “something” can mean your Plex configuration, your home network, the router or how your ISP connects you to the internet)

The server-side remote playback restrictions are easier to check :wink:
Check out if there’s a restriction to Settings > Server > Remote Access > Limit remote stream bitrate

Limit remote stream bitrate is set to Original (No limit). I’m so lost as to what the problem might be.
