unfortunately I have no success getting my setup to work, although I followed your latest instructions.
Setup: ATV3 (latest firmware), Synology ds214+ (Plex Server running, Plex Connect installed and running, Python installed and running). Plex Connect Log says all okay, serving on my NAS’ IP and ports 53, 81 and 443.
Problem: Changed network DNS on ATV3 to my NAS’ IP. From that moment I get no more connection to the internet (iTunes Store e.g.). When then trying to create the new trailers profile on ATV3, ATV3 doesn’t save the profile, only keeps on trying to until I step back by pressing Menu on the remote. When hitting the trailers app, nothing happens (unable to connect).
To me, it seems like my ATV3 doesn’t connect to the NAS in a way, so all the rest doesn’t work at all. Can’t imagine the reason, what I did wrong. Can anybody help with an advice?
In my experience, if PlexConnect is not working and the ATV is using the PlexConnect server as it’s DNS server, the other channels will not work, as you describe. The ATV will route all it’s DNS requests to the PlexConnect server and fail to get a response. As a quick test, assuming you have a wireless router, you can unplug the ethernet plug from the ATV, which should punt it back to wireless settings, and presumably everything should start working on the ATV again.
I would go back to the trouble-shooting section and make sure that when you set another computer’s DNS server to the PlexConnect server, you get the correct response on all ports. Also double-check the firewall settings on the PlexConnect server (and make sure no routers or hardware in between the ATV and the PlexConnect server are interfering with data on these ports).
My last bit of advice is to be patient. The other day, I updated my NAS’s OS, updated Plex Media Server and reinstalled PlexConnect. ATV couldn’t find the Plex server. Removed and reinstalled the certificate. Didn’t work. Removed and reinstalled the certificate AGAIN, and it finally worked. Moral of the story: ATV is a finicky beast. I always - always - always hard reboot the ATV when I’m having issues by removing the power cord from the ATV.
thank you for your answer and your patience with me as a beginner with this. I followed your advice to check the DNS access to the plex connect server (Sinology NAS) by changing my MacBookAir’s DNS settings to the IP of the NAS. Same problem: Can’t connect to any website in a browser.
So I think something must be interfering communication to the NAS. But what can it be and how can I check? I am not familiar with checking “response on all ports”. How do I do this? My NAS’ firewall has opened ports 53, 80, 81 and 443. My network communication goes wireless from my MacBookAir / ATV3 over an Apple AirportExtreme Base Station. No DHCP for all clients. The NAS is connected to the Airport Extreme via AVM Powerline.
I also updated to the latest Sinology DSM built. Any Idea?
