I’m experiencing a new issue in which 4k UHD rips from MakeMKV randomly drop audio during playback, but not with rips from DVDFab. Both rips are on my NAS uncompressed, playing back with Plex on an Apple TV. The issue follows when playing back on multiple devices. Any ideas what’s happening here?
Here’s my specs:
Ripping on Mac mini M1 running 12.6.2, using MakeMKV 1.17.2
Playing back on Plex, version 1.30.0.6486-7000 on my NAS, and version 8.13 on Apple TV. Apple TV is running tvOS 16.2.
Based on what I’ve seen, Plex randomly dropping the audio track is a known bug on the Apple TV client – independent from what container/codecs you’re using.
On a good day, I can keep playing media over hours without issues.
On a bad day, Plex will drop the audio on every other item.
There’s a few threads discussing that experience and some workarounds. Apparently, some users were able to largely bypass the issue by using the legacy player. Based on my experience, it’s enough to return to the app’s home screen, return to the video in question and restart playback.
Thanks for the reply. I thought that might be the case but without fail, a rip from DVDFab plays without issue while one from MakeMKV drops.
If anyone finds this in the future, updating Plex Media Server to 1.30.1.6562-7000 fixed the issue.
