Audio Passthrough support on Xbox beta

I am confused, in your other pictures the player shows transcoding, but in the pms dashboard picture, it shows direct playing.

is it working now ?

did you restart your xbox after enabling pass through ?

I’ve just upgraded my TV and soundbar to eArc and my TV now supports 4K 120hz on the Series X.

However when I enable audio passthrough the video stutters and audio is very glitchy and everything is unwatchable.

I have the Series X going to the TV and the Soundbar connected to the TV via eArc HDMI.

What am I doing wrong with this setup as it seems to support what I’m trying to do?

Hey all, I just got my Xbox Series X about 2 weeks ago. Installed Plex and i believe there has been an update since then. I have my Xbox going into a new Yamaha receiver then to an input in my new Sony 4k TV. All cables are nice and upgraded that can handle current data (up to 8k)

Here’s what’s happening (and i don’t know if the recent update is causing the behavior). My movies start off playing the correct audio (passthrough) like DTS and TrueHD etc…, but i notice maybe 20 min or so later my receiver no longer shows the correct audio and instead shows PCM. So it switches as some point. I now know that the controller button with the 2 squares shows me info and plan to see some info (with screenshots if that helps), but was wondering if anyone else experienced this.

Update: Able to do passthrough inconsistently however when it works it works. Especially after upgrading to 2.1 HDMI 48gbps Audioquest cables (way too expensive though).

Does anyone have any experience with the Sony X90J 4K TV and the Series X? I’m thinking either the TV or the Soundbar is the issue.

Edit: If I start a movie or TV show it’s hit or miss but just rewinding or fast forwarding seems to fix any judder or audio glitches. Also the audio is badly out of sync on initial play but after doing the above it syncs up. Hope these issues are ironed out as I would love to have 1 device for all entertainment purposes.

I’m seeing similar behavior. Tiny judder every so often and the occasional sync issues, where I’ve stopped and replayed then all is well. What i’ve noticed in my situation, i play and
some minutes into the movie, i get a second of buffering and that’s when it switches to PCM (or at least my Yamaha no longer says Atmos, instead PCM after that second of a buffer). My Xbox Series X has a hardwired gigabit ethernet, just in case someone things the buffering might be a wifi issue.

I’m running the Xbox Series X into a Yamaha RX-V6A AVR then into my Sony x900H. For a second i thought having eARC enabled (for the TV audio sent to my Yamaha), but that didn’t fix the audio drop.

At the same time, the issue i’m experiencing with the changing of Atmos to PCM could be my AVR, but then again, my Nvidia Shield plugged into the same AVR is not doing it, so I suspect the Xbox Plex app.

Oh ok yeah pretty similar situation I’m seeing to. I think the Sony x9000H runs the same TV menu and audio settings as the X90J? I tried changing a bunch of settings setting eArc to auto and whatever combination I ended up with last night seemed to work well after hard power cycle. I’ve heard the Sony TVs having audio issues as well so I wouldn’t rule out the TV just yet!

Overall when playing TrueHD I was able to get the green indicator on my soundbar to light up which indicates ATMOS is playing. However on a few occasions when skipping back and forth through movies to test playback the color of the soundbar changed to amber which indicates DTS/PCM even on ATMOS files. So that indeed may be an issue with the Xbox Plex app.

I hope the Xbox Plex team can offer some insight! @Moussa The Series X is nearly the perfect Plex client and all in one entertainment device for me. Smooth direct play, Audio Passthrough (when done correctly) and a pretty good interface make it a really good contender IMO. Seems the app may need to add more Video/Audio codec support maybe? I’ve also noticed some Green flickering lines on some files during Direct Play. Have you experienced that any?

Alright so i bought a series s and this is my experience. Im using an LG CX 65 and a Samsung Q950T soundbar. Direct play works flawlessly with atmos and 4k hdr and dv (outputs as hdr until plex adds dv support) remuxes. I even tried a 60 fps dv remux with atmos which worked without a hitch. A damn shame that lg cx doesnt support dts though. I could connect the xbox to the soundbar but then i miss out on 120hz 4k as the soundbar only supports 60 hz 4k. Also i just get a blank picture with the soundbar until i fiddle around with the inputs some. So one dts x remux could be direct streamed with it converting audio to aac while another movie with dts x was muted. Dont know why that is. Also tried the dts x unbound app didnt even let me choose dts x bitstream.

EDIT: this is over 5 ghz wifi btw

Glad to hear someone has a fully working setup as that is my goal with the Series X! I want just one entertainment device without having to switch to multiple and I am almost there with the Series X.

I opted for the Vizio M series 5.1 soundbar with Atmos but did consider the one you have as well. How is the sound quality and does it do Atmos or just dolby digital? I may consider the upgrade!

Edit: I’m also unable to select DTS:X even though my soundbar supports it. So far Bitstream Out and Dolby Atmos Home Theatre is the working setup I have right now.

the first step for anyone using an xbox connected to a TV, instead of xbox directly connected to an AVR or soundbar, is to try exactly that.

plug the xbox into the AVR or soundbar and see if it works there, this eliminates the tv from the chain, ie one less thing that could go wrong.

DTS support on TV/soundbars is hit or miss, make sure you buy one that supports DTS/HD/MA (and TRUEHD), if you want direct play.

EARC is still new technology, but should work with cables and tv/soundbars that are compatible with EARC, but there are certainly compatibility pains.

My xbox seriesx goes into my yamaha receiver, the AVR out goes into a hue sync box, then the sync box goes to my tv (2017ish tcl roku 4k).

My experience is mostly good, I do also have the occasional stutter/desync, but a quick 10s rewind normally gets it back in sync.

I have also seen the the truehd/atmos drop to pcm (ie passthrough fails), but that has been rare, for me.

Having hdmi 2.1 cables that support earc (I’m using these @ https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08FQZXXKB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) is going to be critical if you want to rule out the cables.

The soundbar is great. Atmos is pretty good on it and music also sounds nice. I tried out an apple tv with apple music recently and dolby atmos music is really something. Ive only watched district 9 with truehd atmos and i really got the 3d sound feel. But it does have some problems. The firmware update process is a pita, i updated manually via usb and im unsure if all modules got updated (subs, sorround). The sub also decides to disconnect sometimes which is a little irritating (power cycle the sub). And the display is on the top of the soundbar for some godforsaken reason. Overall im still happy with the purchase though, got a good price because samsung have released the q950a, the successor.

I watched a 4K Remux with TrueHD 7.1 just now. One good thing is, somehow my
AVR never switched to PCM. The bad is it got out of sync 3 times. Every time it did, I stopped the movie and resumed and was back in sync. I clicked on the Xbox controller button that has the 2 squares to open the debug window while sync got out of whack and all looked good. I was thinking i would see dropped frames or something, but there were 0 dropped frames every time.

Like i mentioned earlier, i have the Xbox Series X hardwired (gigabit) running into my AVR. Since my Nvidia Shield Pro is running into the same AVR, but doesn’t have the desyncing issue (nor did it change Audio formats), it leaves my Plex app as the culprit.

Don’t get me wrong, not complaining. Honestly, I am super excited that we’re even here. Just hoping to share my experience to help squash any bugs out of the app.

Same experience for me as well watching TrueHD 7.1 blu-ray (mkv) last night. It stayed in the correct audio format but did go out of sync 3 times. Each time a 10 sec rewind fixed the issue and it played perfectly after that. I noticed no dropped frames on my end as well when checking.

So I think the de-syncing is audio passthrough related either via Xbox or the Plex app. Especially since the Plex app can only Direct Play with Passthrough enabled. If somehow the Xbox is almost failing audio passthrough that may cause the de-syncing to occur? Just a guess @Moussa

Either way I’m super excited the Xbox app is at this stage with audio passthrough. When everything works as intended playback and video quality are pretty much flawless. Once these audio bugs are ironed out I see this as a contender to the Shield TV pro! Especially with the ability to play next-gen games in 4K 120hz (although I rarely play video games these days).

Yup, honestly if the audio de-sync issue is resolved and Dolby Vision support is added, i’m set. It will be my go to Plex player on that TV.

Found an interesting video here which seems to point to Sony TV’s from 2020-2021 not playing nice with the Series X at 4K 120hz bitstream out Sony A90J & Xbox Series X Audio Drop Outs 4K 120Hz & Bitstream Output - YouTube

I noticed audio drop outs when my kid was playing fortnite and other games so it’s not exclusive to just the Plex app on my end.

I suspect the desyncs are Xbox/system related as well, but it’s hard to pin point from a user perspective. I have not used any other Xbox apps with pass through to compare.

Have spent some some time testing. It seems that only first audio track in 4K HDR mkv correctly passthrough to AVR.

Yes, i saw info about Sony and audio dropouts (i believe with eARC), but i’m going Xbox Series X → Yamaha 7.1 AVR → Sony x900h. My Yamaha is processing the Audio and I have eARC turned off on the Sony (because i wanted to test to see if that was the issue). If i’m not mistaken, my TV shouldn’t be receiving any sound yes?

Also, my Nvidia Shield Pro is connected to that same AVR and plays everything (audio/video) I throw at it (and passes through all audio with no issues). Just really want to see the Xbox Plex App mature enough to move my Shield to my Living Room TV.

FYI, I watched a 4K Remux last night and it went out of sync quite a few times. It was a pretty high bitrate, i wonder if its related to that. I noticed it usually starts getting jittery right before the audio sync gets off. Also, one time it got so jittery, that my AVR changed to PCM (hadn’t seen that happen in the last few movies we’ve watched).

I haven’t found a consistent video or spot where it always desyncs, because a 10 sec rewind always resyncs the video/audio, for me.

One of the reasons I suspect a background process on the xbox may be spiking the cpu and/or gpu causing the seemingly random jitter/desync.

If anyone can determine a particular video segment which will always desync (even after rewinding past it, it will desync again), please create a sample and logs that can be submitted to dev.

Does the dts app on the xbox allow dts decoding by plex? Cause the lg cx doesnt. It would solve another headache

Maybe someone can school me about decoding and passthrough. If the Xbox is passing through something like Dolby Atmos audio, does it decode and passthrough? or just passthrough and the AVR or Soundbar decodes?

Sorry for the basic question, never thought of the process that is happening when audio is passing through.
