Automatically carry subtitles over to shared library users

I have selected, verified and added subtitles for almost every movie in my Plex server by using either the subtitle search option or the subtitle upload option. These subtitles automatically show any time I play a movie from my library with my admin account id. If I share my movies with others, however, these subtitles do not show up - leaving them either without subtitles or searching for a matching subtitle on their own. This is not something my 91 year old hearing impaired mother can really do every time she wants to watch a movie from my server.

As noted above, I know the subtitles I have implemented (mostly external .SRT files) work. I wantt that subtitle, if present, to automatically show anytime anyone plays a movie from my server just as it does when I play a movie. At least, the option to play that ‘pre-loaded’ subtitle should be an option for any person who has shared access to my library - something like a “If present, automatically play subtitle in source library file(s)” option. That way, they can choose to do this or not.

When playing a movie from a shared library the user should also have the ability to not display the subtitle automatically, to turn off the display of the subtitle, or to override the pre-selected subtitle display with a subtitle of their own choosing. Whatever subtitle changes they make under their own id when playing a movie from a shared library should be recorded and kept for that movie when played on their account.

I hope this gets some traction, It can save folks using shared Plex libraries a ton of time and frustration trying to find the select the right subtitle file when that work has already been done by the Plex library admin/owner.

Thank you… Mike

Thanks for your suggestion. There’s already another thread discussing an option to make on-demand subtitles you searched for / assigned from within Plex available to other users. Please comment/vote in that thread to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes.

Based on the related support article it appears this behavior is by design… so it might be this is due to a licensing agreement.

You’ll already get the behavior you’re looking for subtitles you’ve stored alongside your media files as well as embedded subtitles in your videos.
