Autoplay on Plexamp - up next not showing alternatives while autoplay is enabled

Hello everyone,

I’m experiencing a strange issue with the autoplay feature and I’m wondering if others are encountering this as well.

My setup:

  • Autoplay is enabled
  • Library contains approximately 1200 songs and 65 albums
  • I use various playback methods (Track Radio, DJ Freeze, etc.)
  • I have several genres well populated
  • Sonic analysis has been performed on all songs

The issue:
When playing music, one of these two scenarios typically occurs:

  1. After 4-5 songs (or sometimes a couple more), the “up next” doesn’t auto populate anymore and my “Up Next” queue remains empty, and no autoplay suggestion appears
  2. In other instances, I properly receive a popup with “Similar Tracks” or “Track Radio” etc. or “Library Radio” suggestions

This inconsistent behavior is confusing. When autoplay is enabled, I would expect to always receive suggestions to keep the music playing. Currently, the “Up Next” sometimes populates with these suggestions and sometimes not - and I have no idea how to make sure that it pops up every time.

It especially doesn’t pop up when playing “track radio” - a feature I would like to use the most as I used to use this on Spotify as lot.

Is this normal behavior or a bug?

The AutoPlay “widget” only shows up when there are a few tracks left in the queue (not too many, not too few). That is why in your first screenshot you don’t see one.

Thank you for your response! Seeing your name tag, you are the right person to know this

I tried testing it by:

  1. Clicking through the “up-next” playlist when initially no widget appeared (specifically selecting the third-to-last song and letting it play), no widget appeared and the music simply stopped.
  2. Using track radio - clicking each subsequent track individually and even clicking all numbers in the correct sequence - the widget still does not appear.

Also, when the widget in some instances does appear when the last song in the “up next” is playing, the widget disappears and autoplay doesn’t work. Does this mean that the widget needs to be activated manually, or should it be able to “load” the widget automatically when the last song is done?

I’ve created a screen recording to demonstrate this issue but unfortunately I’m unable to upload it here.

EDIT: I tried further communicating with the widget and now by long-pressing the widget now it doesn’t do anything (trigger/load additional music) in the up next list and therefore inevitably the music stops

Please see the logs. Don’t know if it helps! It probably doesn’t help that I was pushing buttons like mad man trying to determine the problem (sorry :))

It should generally add to the queue when there is 1-2 tracks remaining; it’s possible to hit :next_track_button: quickly and hit the end without it being able to do its thing, but we do try to avoid that.

I think I see what’s going on; in cases where the play queue was created by a station (e.g. track radio), AutoPlay tries not to get involved because the station itself is supposed to fill in the gap as playback proceeds.

Exactly! I was trying to identify the same issue at the same time

The widget does work when playing an album or artist/style, but does not work with track radio or album radio.

Does this mean that track/album radio does not have autoplay functionality as the “up next” list ends and the widget doesn’t activate? Or was I just clicking “next” too impatiently?

If so, if I wait until the queue finishes, will the music automatically repopulate (due to track radio rather than autoplay)? Sometimes I get anxious seeing the final songs approaching and try to figure out what’s happening!

Love the swift response you’re giving and apologies for the loads of questions - just downloaded Plexamp with Plex Pass and just trying everything out!

It should, until it runs out; the AutoPlay widget is conservative, so if it looks like a radio queue, it doesn’t interfere.

Thanks so much - I will try to not hit the “next song” button so fast, and see if it’s working!

Hi Elan,

So this morning I started a track radio and let it run through without clicking on next song. However, it still doesn’t auto populate new songs nor does it show the autoplay widget.

I think it’s supposed to do one of those right? The track radio was only 5 songs while my library is >1100 songs, and much more in the genre I started the track radio from.

Your library is small, so it’s not unexpected that your radio might run out of tracks.

As I said, the AutoPlay tries not to interfere with a radio play queue, and it has trouble telling the difference between just waiting for the server to generate more and there not being any more.

Gotcha - many thanks! I’ll use another method then for the time being while expanding my music catalogue
