I have a media server that is accessible via Internet, the problem is that it is very slow, sometimes it also results not able to connect. When I finally can start the streaming of a movie the quality tho is very bad.
So I tried to connect my client to my home VPN and the streaming works perfectly.
Do you have any suggestion on how to fix it? What can I try to change?
Thank you, I wish you an amazing day.
Server Version#: 1.18.8.2527
Player Version#: web player
You probably have set the (client) internet/remote streaming quality to a relatively low bitrate, so Ppex is transcoding the Video to a lower resolution/bitrate to comply with that restriction.
Occasionally this can turn into a downward spiral if your server is not super strong and fails to transcode the video to the set quality in real-time. If that happens, Plex will try to further reduce the output quality until it cpu can keep up.
By running the communication through your VPN you made Plex believe the streaming happens locally and therefore stream in original quality. So it seems your internet upload speed is strong enough for that. You should be able to overcome the issue by setting Settings > Plex Web > Quality > Video Quality to Original (or Maximum)
Hi Tom, thank you for the reply, unfortunately I already set it on Maximum resolution.
Anyway I notice the problem even before streaming a movie because when I try to connect it often says that the server is not available.
I will try change the port used for the server and the I’ll post the result, but please if you have any other idea let me know.
Are you using 32400 as your public port? Because Plex is relatively popular service, other people could be scanning this port. Try changing to a different public port.
