Bandwidth Chart shows activity but Now Playing shows nothing

Server Version#: latest as of 2023-12-04 (Windows)
Player Version#: ?

I’m seeing activity in the Bandwidth chart (*Remote, not Local), but nothing is being reported as playing in the Now Playing area above. I understand the occasional, say, 50kbps spikes, but 2mbps+ over several seconds? It seems obvious that one of my users/friends is watching something - or attempting to watch? or buffering? but its not being reported. This has been going on for a few days now. It could have been longer, I just happened to notice recently. It happens several times a day.

I looked through each one of my users/friends, and I have “downloading” function disabled for all of them. So it’s not like they are pre-downloading content to watch later.

It would be helpful to be able to see the IP address of whoever is demanding this much bandwidth, at the time (by hovering on the chart maybe?). With that info, I could at least get an idea of which of my users it is.

If you have debug logging activated on the server, you should be able to get an idea about that from the server logs.
You might even be able to see the user name as the log lines fly by in the Troubleshooting - Console. But that is probably too fast if your sevrer is busy with other things at the same time. So take a look at your Plex Media Server.log in an editor andf look for user activity.

Those bandwidths could be caused by mobile music playback. Plexamp and Plex for Android/iOS are technically always “downloading” the data in order to play them on the user’s device.
Of course, you should still the the activity on the Web app dashboard, but this can be sometimes interfered by a bad connection quality between client and server.

ahhh music ! that makes sense. thank you. next time i see it happen i will try to grab the logs immediately to verify.
