Beginners question about backups and Plex

Server Version#: 1.17.0.1709

I have been using a NAS for a while now and I have created several ‘Top Level’ folders - Primary and Secondary for important and not so important files, the idea being the Primary folder is backed up daily and the Secondary folder is backed up weekly. I am thinking of adding a Tertiary folder which may not even need backed up or maybe on an infrequent manual basis.

I have now purchased a Synology DS918+ and when I install the Plex Media Server it creates a Plex shared folder and under that is a sub folder called Library. Is there a benefit in putting all my media in that sub folder or can I simply ignore it and continue putting my media in my own sub folder under the Secondary top level folder?

As you will notice, there are 6 files (each in a different language) which caution against putting media in the Plex share.

The Plex share is for Plex use only. When I wrote the Package management scripts, I had to decide which was better:

  1. Make the Plex share visible so folks can add plug-ins and retrieve Log files in those rare cases when PMS won’t start - even at the risk of media going in there where it doesn’t belong
  2. Keep the share invisible and mandate manual retrieval of logs be done at the Synology command line.

Obviously, Nobody wants to deal with the Synology command line environment unless you’re good at Linux so that decided it.

Basic management on Synology:

  1. Backup the Library folder which is in the Plex share.
  2. Don’t put any media anywhere in the Plex share. Create your own shares for your media. Synology’s default shares for media behave strangely based on which apps are loaded.
