Being able to filter TV show with resolution, like we can do with movies

i am kind of suprised i even need to suggest this, how come i can filter movie with all kind of filter

and yet TV show seem to be forgotten

HDR,
IN PROGRESS
DUPLICATES
DECADE
RESOLUTION,
AUDIO LANGUAGE,
SUBTITLE

to cite a few, resolution being the most important for me

how come ? also if you could make the dropdown menu similar for both, why for movie its goes content rating, collection when for TV show its content rating, studio, network, country, collection ?

thank you

You can filter TV shows by resolution:

It’s an advanced filter option. This works when viewing your library by seasons or episodes as well.

HDR, DOVI, (Episode) Duplicates, (Episode) In Progress, Audio Language, etc… are available advanced filters as well.

If not using the advanced filters you need to view by episodes to see the resolution filter.

Filtering by resolution per episode gives a very long list, because it returns a match for each episode that has the resolution you’re looking for. So the more shows you have, the longer the list gets.

But isn’t this approach a bit counterintuitive? Usually, if you have a specific resolution — say 720p — it’s consistent across the whole season.

Pshanew’s method is actually better, since it does exactly what I’m looking for and prevents the screen from being filled with hundreds of hits. But it’s still a bit cumbersome to have to use the advanced filter to get it, while for movies it’s the standard behavior.

So is there a technical reason why you guys chose a different approach from the one used for movies?

This is only supposition, but my guess is that it’s because “resolution” isn’t an inherent property of the show itself. You can (and in fact I do) have shows where the episodes it contains are of different resolutions.

For example, I have shows whose episodes are 480p, 576p, and 720p. So, for the advanced filter I showed above, what it’s really showing are TV shows which have at least one episode of the desired resolution. I’d still have to switch to viewing by episodes to see which ones specifically are the desired resolution.

If you’ve built your TV libraries such that each show’s episodes are all of the same resolution then it might be useful to have a high-level filter for it at the show-level. But, practically, a show doesn’t have a resolution; only its individual episodes do.

Just adding a thought… you can use an advanced filter (see BigWheel’s screenshot… option at the bottom of the filter list).
This allows to filter for (episodes) with a specific resolution while displaying the results grouped by shows. This way, Plex will list all shows that contain a single low-res episode as well as all shows that are entirely available in the resolution you’re interested in.

2025 clean-up: implemented (episodes can be filtered by resolution; advanced filters can filter for shows with episodes in a specific resolution)
