Less than fullscreen playback in PS3 App

Hi, I’ve recently found a few of my DVD rips are playing back not at full screen on the PS3 app. The aspect ratio is correct at 16:9 but it’s in a box in the middle of the screen with black borders top, bottom and sides.

I think the files might actually be cinematic 21:9 or something. When you watch them through PHT on the PC they take the full width of the widescreen 16:9 monitor and have black bars top and bottom.

Any suggestions for settings or other to make this type of content play on the PS3 the same as a PC, i.e. full width but still with bars top and bottom?

Pretty sure the content I’m having issues with is ‘cinematic widescreen’ format. Anyone else have this issue? Any help greatly apprecaited.

DVD rips are typically anamorphic videos. The PS3 and PS4 have a problem playing those currently.

Appreciate the response Matt. This is a separate question to my question about anamorphic DVD Rips. They play in 4:3 aspect ration and are squashed, due to the anamorphic encoding and issues you’ve answered satisfactorily for me (and others) elsewhere.

This pertains to DVD rips of more recent movies, that state on the covers they are presented in their original ‘widescreen’ cinema format 21:9. They play in a box, i.e. black border around the top and sides, but the aspect ratio of the image I think is right.

Unless I’m misunderstanding and these are also anamorphic? As I thought that was only something on older DVD’s when they were trying to cater for both 4:3 and 16:9 TV’s during the changeover period of the TV market?

Thanks again for your help Matt. If these 21:9 aspect are also an anamorphic encoding, is it reasonable to assume that playback will be fixed when Sony provide you the fix for the plex app?

As with anamorphic videos the files play fine ,i.e. full screen width with black bars top and bottom on a 16:9 screen, when played direct on the PC.

You’re going to tell me they are anamorphic aren’t you? I can feel it.

Brace yourself, i think their anamorphic.

DVDs typically hold a max resolution of 720x480. This is an aspect ratio of 1.5. The 21:9 movies have an aspect ratio of 2.3. I’m probably oversimplifying this but, to me anamorphic videos are videos with non-square pixels.

Sony gave us a testing build of the new platform (which is supposed to fix anamorphic videos). I’m happy to test a couple of your 21:9 DVD rips. Want to post a couple sample clips to DropBox or Google Drive and send the URLs to me via Private Message?

Does it also fix the 1080 output issue too hopefully

Yep we’ll fix that as well.

This has stopped me buying a yearly subscription to Plex as we watch all of our movies (DVD rips) on a PS3. At the moment the aspect ratio is simply too annoying to use so instead we use the Playstation’s own video playing from Plex Server using DNLA and while this works well, it lacks all the nice features that the Plex PS3 app has.

I very much look forward to an updated version of the PS3 app which fixes the aspect ration problems!

Hey Reverend, I would say the Plex app for PS3 is still worth subscribing. For me, out of my library of 500 odd DVD’s it’s a few, maybe 30 that are from the era of the 3:4 vs 16:9 changeover period and they are encoded anamorphically to play on either screen size - these have an issue in plex.

Additionally, newer movies that are 21:9 cinemascope aspect ratio, they seem to be anamorphic and also have the playback issue. For me this is about 10-15 movies.

Other than that, the other 400 odd DVD rips I have from my DVD’s play perfectly and you get cover art, and you can fast-forward and rewind, and it remembers where you’re up to if you stop it (all things the DLNA doesn’t do).
