I finally had this great idea to search for another option for playback of my sports. I settled on MXPlayer and am thrilled. No sideline install required, it’s available in the Google store on the Shield. This player uses the built in decoders to play back. My seeking is INSTANT when using this player with none of the issues documented in my previous post. I’ve successfully connected to a couple of my other Plex servers with SMB, the playback is just as good. Come on Plex, you should be making the Shield your showcase platform, if these guys on MXPlayer can do it you should be able to.
I am guessing the issues you have are with 1080i content, I also have poor results with that playback. As I understand it (from the NVidia forums), it is an incompatibility between the MPEG encoder used by the network and the HW decoder in the Shield. Were you able to make MXPlayer the default Shield player for everything??? If so how?? That would deff be a fix if NVidia put that in an update or there was a how-to guide on how to make it work. Basically what ever player NVidia wants to use would need to detect the video stream, and if it is 1080i it switches to a software decoder, for all other resolutions it uses it’s HW decoder.
If Plex wanted to implement a fix, I think that the ffmpeg decoder can already handle the deinterlacing/detelicine for 1080i, then it would need to transcode the stream for the Plex player app. Would be nice if they could do that.
My issues are not with 1080i, I transcode to 264 1080p or 720p depending on the broadcaster. My issues are while playing these transcoded recordings.
I run MXplayer directly from the Nvidia Shield launcher, it picks up the local Shield Server content automatically, I connect to my other Plex Servers using SMB on my local network.
