I have my sound setup to output as 7.1 (pic1). I play a DTS HD-MA file this time (as I also have it locally to test) in both MPC and Movies&TV.
I play the exact same file in PMP and it doesn’t even give me the HD-MA option (pic2), so now I’m back to thinking plex? Argh. When you’ve taken the time to setup a 7.2 system I want it to work!
Your windows sound settings should be fine left at 7.1 (it doesn’t hurt to do the dolby atmos for home theater config either if your receiver can decode Atmos).
Based on the info screen it looks like the server is converting the TrueHD to PCM. I don’t know why that would bust the receiver up, unless it cannot decode high bitrate PCM possibly. Try checking the audio settings inside PMP itself since the goal here is to bitstream/passthrough the track untouched. Select your user from the top-right corner, then click Settings→Audio and be sure all the passthrough options your receiver supports are selected. You can usually tell if it’s working during playback because the audio section of the info overlay will show spdif_truehd as the codec (well, that and you should hear the audio!).
As for the DTS, I would safely ignore that. Plex stopped identifying the different levels of DTS tracks in the UI a while back (thread). If the file has a DTS-HD MA track (and passthrough is enabled), PMP will play it (not just the lossy core).

Also configure your system refresh rate for 59Hz so that a perfect 3:2 pulldown can occur. You also need to make sure you have the latest Intel graphics drivers installed as it has the correct Intel HD audio drivers for HDMI HD audio passthrough. The Windows update drivers tend not to have this.
I just came across this thread while trying to get Plex to play 7.1 channel audio. I am running Plex Media Server from my NAS (Drobo B810n) and using the Plex app on the Amazon Fire TV. The audio settings there are not even remotely similar to what is being shown here.
I have downloaded and installed the Plex Media Player on my computer, but when I bring up the Audio settings, the Device type is “Basic”, Channels is “Stereo” and Device is “Autoselect device” and I cannot change them.
I understand that this is because my computer only has a basic sound card hooked up to it, but how do I set things up so that I can have bitstream audio output from Plex to my stereo receiver?
Your computer’s audio setup has nothing to do with playback on the Fire TV (just to clarify). If you have your computer connected to a receiver then it would be a different story.
I’ve been meaning to reply for days, just had other things going on. Thanks for clarifying this, and in hindsight I’m telling myself “duh” but it was one of those things that I had gone down such a specific rabbit hole of trying to find settings that pertained to my exact setup, I wasn’t realizing that I was reading about a completely different setup.
I mentioned back on my other thread that I’ve upgraded to an NVidia Shield TV and so far the results are fantastic. Thanks again.
