Black screen on all media after updating to 1.42.1

Same problem here, and as agentbinky said still not working with last release…

Been doing a little bit more testing, now using 1.43.3.2951-1d73e3f3, and found a really odd result. I am unsure what to make of this to be honest. Did a full wipe of anything Plex or MPV related on my computer, including deleting the folders wiping recycle bin and restarting window. For reference my computer is:
Windows 10 21H2, Nvidia 3080 GPU, Intel I7-10700k CPU. Latest updates for everything.

But back to my testing. I am still experiencing the black screen issue on all videos with a variety of settings applied. But I have managed to get video playback to work in an odd way.

By opening up Discord and starting to screen share my Plex Window. And than playing a video, while Plex is still showing a black screen with just audio playing. The Discord screen share is correctly showing the playing video without issue. I am unsure why this works this way, or what is happening.Definitely isn’t a solution, just something odd.

Wild find there Thym. Maybe it’ll help someone track down the problem. I was thinking maybe it had something to do with NVIDIA’s overlay features since when Plex launches I get the popup for it. If we continue to post system specs and software environments, I’m sure it would help the team narrow things down. Just as a side note, this is completely unrelated but – I absolutely love the new “Discover” feature. You guys are on the right track!

I have also noticed the Discord discovery. Also, when switching from windowed to full screen and back there is a very fast flicker of video. Sometimes its the scene that is playing, sometimes its the thumbnail of the current video. But after this <0.5 second flicker it just goes back to a black screen. I am surprised it has taken this long for them to figure this out. Have they even acknowledged that they are aware of this issue in any official capacity?

Something else that would be helpful: Are there any users of the newest version for Desktop PCs NOT encountering this issue? Trying to figure out the difference between people having the problem and people that are not might be helpful. We don’t need a ton of examples but a handful with specs might help.

Windows 10, latest supported build
Intel Core i7 4770 CPU
nVidia RTX 2070 GPU

No issues. I am even able to use the highest quality setting under
Settings - Plex for Windows - ‘Show Advanced’ - Player - “Video Playback Quality”
You should play with this selector.
Make sure to also toggle “Use Hardware Decoding” back and forth and compare results.

Since we got another Plex Update, though rather minor decided to check it out. 1.43.4, still having the same issues as previously. Have tried with a variety of the Video Playback settings, Hardware Decoding, Refresh Rate Switching. All to no change in allowing the video to play.

Have also tested Plex HTPC V1.14.1. Which experiences the same issues as Plex Windows.

What does work though is using Plex MPV Shim. After installing and casting from the desktop to MPV Shim. MPV Shim than opens the video in a seperate MPV window and plays the video without issue like it should. So at the moment I have found at least two ways to see that the video is being played, just not displayed properly by Plex.

So whatever the issue is, I am figuring it must be related to the built-in MPV player that Plex is using. The changelog for 1.42.1 when the issues do mention they made some various changes to MPV. Along with it seems that the 1.42.1 update added the additional Video Playback options and the Angle playback option.

It’s not consistent across all setups. A friend has a Windows 11 PC and an NVIDIA 3070Ti and has no issues playing back content, even from my server and using the same version of the app. All you folks recommending this or that setting probably aren’t really contributing much. Not even Plex’s official content will stream properly with this particular bug.

Is there a way to get developer attention on the problem? It seems like this is a case where community support is not successfully resolving the issue.

If there is I don’t know about it. One would assume the moderators here could do something useful, but you’d be surprised how terrible community engagement is with some of these projects.

Another Update, 1.44.0, and another update that doesn’t fix the issue. Same problem still happening without any change at all. All video no matter the source just shows a black screen. Audio plays but no video.

I’m beginning to suspect it’s some kind of blacklist. Surely the problem cannot be this elusive, or Plex devs this clueless.

Clearly support does not care about this problem or does not wish to risk blowback by actually addressing it. If your primary player is now horribly broken vote with your wallet. Cancel your Plex Pass and give the terrible support as the reason. That’s what I’ve done. I think I’m also going to look into alternative players.

Still no news from support about this ? :frowning:

See if this helps: Blank screen on 2013 Mac Pro - #16 by BigWheel

Should I try anyway it if it isn’t an AMD graphics card and isn’t Mac? Also that seems to be a solution for black screen on launch, where this is black screen on playback.

This started happening.

Windows 10. ASUS 3080Ti.
Crashes after a few clicks usually.

Seems a whole lot slower as well in player.

It can’t hurt to try. Even if it is not successful for you, it could provide valuable clues for the developers.

The answer is no. It does not solve the problem.

Again requesting developer attention to this issue. Community suggestions is clearly not solving.
