Plex for Mac/Windows 1.34.1 Test Builds

Update: 1.35.1 has been release which supplants these builds. Use it instead (see solution post or last post for link).

These builds are posted as test builds. We’d like the community to download an try them out and communicate your experiences back in this thread.

Windows:

  • Removed

Mac:

  • Removed

These versions are the same as the previously released 1.34.1 except they don’t disable GPU acceleration in Chromium.

Blank Screens:

We had previously done this because some users experience an all black or white screen upon launching the app with the acceleration enabled. If you experienced this, we want your feedback on this version. This contains a different version of Chromium than when we last saw these so there is a chance that this could resolve the issue :crossed_fingers:

Scrollbars Visible on Mac

This version does nothing to alleviate the scrollbars visible on the Mac. It is currently intended only to see if we can safely re-enable Chromium’s GPU acceleration.

I saw your reply in GH Issue, I tested and it works for me!!!

Yep this is running much better. I notice no more automated scrolling but I assume that’s by design.

No black screen issue anymore with my double adaptive sync setup like i had before with that attampted version. buuut i still have the nvidia experience framecounter pop up. i seems to have gone after a while tho so… i dont care too much but it might be good information to get so there you go.

also the absurdly slow dashboard and settings scrolling with peaking cpu usage is gone that the latest player introduced with its design changes and what not.

This is quite literally a night and day difference. Last update was so slow it was becoming unusable. The add to collection menu took a solid 5 seconds to open before, now its just as snappy as the browser version.

Hi, I’m a PLEX noob. Got a WD NAS that had PLEX built in and configured it last week. Are these builds like clients to the server, or are they server processes themselves? Sorry if that isn’t phrased correctly, still learning here.

This is the PC client and not the server.

Works great for me. All the slowdowns are gone.

The performance is significantly better. No issues noticed so far.

This build also seems to fix the insanely high CPU usage on my Surface Pro 7. Direct playing a video now only takes about 7 to 8%

Nice and smooth traversing throughout the app. Nice UI refresh. Overall works well, and looks nice. Thanks.

So far the news is encouraging that this is the route forward. We were concerned that the white/black screens would show up again and that we would need to find a way to detect that situation and disable the GPU for those users but it appears that the Chromium update fixed that. A bit unexpected but not at all unwelcomed.

There appears to be no way for app developers to disable this in their app. In fact searching for information on this is rife with complaints about being unable to disable it in a huge host of apps. This really falls into the pervue of Nvidia since it is their software which is displaying the fps.

Thanks for the clarification.

On windows 11 everything works great and seemed to fix any performance problems. On my macbook pro (2019) trying to run the new version initially just showed a blank screen but after a couple hours I tried it again and it worked. There may have been a chance plex was still running when I ran the new version in case anyone else has the same issue.

This is definitely Nvidia’s problem - when they overhauled that overlay it broke for a lot of people and it is still screwed up today, or at least for me, who only wants the fps counter and not all the other garbage. If I hit Alt+R several times, occasionally it will work. Don’t know why they had to mess with a good thing that worked solidly for many years.

Indeed it runs smooth now!

The test build immediately crashes on my PC before anything is displayed. I removed the latest plex install before installing the test build. I also cleared appdata and registry before launching the application.

Below is the detail from the Application event viewer. Also attached is the plex log that was generated. Please let me know if there is anything additional you require.

Fix UI sluggish performance for me.

so is there no way for 2 companies to communicate with eachother and work out a solution? i could name saveral apps that had the counter in the beginning and got rid of it over time. sorry if this sounds a little scummy but its the first thing that logically comes to mind. get in contact with nvidia. From their perspective they cant automatically know ever single app…
