Black screen on all media after updating to 1.42.1

The topic of this thread has absolutely nothing to do with the server database.
Whatever you assume might be your issue, it has nothing to do with what is being discussed in here.

Still same problem here and not using AMD videocard.

I had the same issue and also had to revert back to 1.41. I kept updating and just using the web app but it loads a lot slower than the actual Windows app. It works with the older version on Windows 10, gtx1080. As long as I can use the app currently I’m ok with it but I hope it gets fixed soon.

In case you had some faint hope still that the Plex Devs recognize this as an issue, and are attempting to fix it. Update 1.45.0 will of course dash those hopes. Once again the same issue remains, sound plays without issue on all videos played. But videos display a black screen while in the Plex app. You can verify that videos are indeed playing by using Plex MPV Shim or screen sharing via discord, but nothing but a black screen is visible on Plex.

Of course have attempted to do clean installs of Plex, have tried rebooting the computer between uninstall and install, updating graphics drivers, deleting folders, reinstalling the included Visual C++.

I feel like I having pretty much given up hope of the Plex Devs recognizing this as an issue by this point, and actually fixing it. If anybody has any actual way of contacting the Plex Devs, I would love to know it.

As an additional test, have also tried the latest Plex HTPC version 1.17.0. And can confirm the issue also exists with that application.

Yep, either it’s intentional or this forum is basically useless. There really is no way to contact the developers, either, there are no contact forms and the support email is ignored via a smug assertion the company ā€œdoesn’t have time to speak with every user.ā€ Plex is only useful as a gateway to streaming service subscriptions now – even the quality of the server application has diminished. Either way, glad to have moved on. I recommend Jellyfin. Less device support but it uses most of the same code, the developer hosts an issue tracker on Github, and you know what? IT ACTUALLY WORKS.

So after weeks of messing around, uninstalling, reinstalling, adjusting Nvidia 3d settings, changing windows scaling, nothing worked.
Finally got something to work
I got fed up, backed up plex.ini located in C:\Users<username>\AppData\Local\Plex and just deleted it, relaunched and it worked.
I do not understand why the reinstall didnt work cause it should have removed the ini file, but i did not validate all files were removed during uninstall

Edit: Forgot to mention on the current Version 1.45.0.3013-1676042f

I think we’re on to something here… this appeared to work for me too.

Has someone already tried to replace the shipped mpv-1.dll with a third-party one? (sorry if this was already discussed here)
If not maybe try that => Here is an explanation of how you can achieve this. (works also for Plex Desktop)
HTPC Tips and Tricks - Plex Players / Desktop Players - Plex Forum
Just make sure you are using the correct path to the cacert.pem file. (it is under the same resources folder inside the Plex Desktop install directory.)

If it’s not working with the different mpv-1.dll and Plex Desktops default values, try to add this

vo=gpu-next

first and if it is still not working try to add this

gpu-context=winvk

to the mpv.conf and try again. Maybe this helps

I was hopeful, but this did not work for me. I only get audio, no picture.

With the 1.46.1 update I have tried the variety of things mentioned thus far in the past few days.

First did a normal clean install of 1.46.1; completely uninstalled Plex and deleted all related folders, and than installed 1.46.1. This did not have any change from what has been happening recently with the black image issue.

Than using the same 1.46.1. I used @seabourne’s method to just remove the Plex.ini file and relaunch Plex. This did not result in any change in my case.

Finally also attempted to follow @Mitzsch’s method of manually updating mpv-1.dll. This method did not fix the issue for me, nor did changing the mpv.conf to include the different configuration options. I did also downgrade to the previous working Plex Version(1.41.1) and update to a more recent mpv-1.dll and found no issue. I can use the updated dll on the older Plex version and do not suffer the black screen issues, it just doesn’t help fix the current issue unfortunately.

So it seems at least I am at the same position I was previously. With there being no progress in fixing the issue coming directly from Plex. Nor it seems any awareness of the issue exists from the Plex Team ether.

I did a little research in my spare time. It seems Plex policy is to not comment much on outstanding issues, maybe for public relations or liability reasons? Seems counter-productive to me. The only thing I can figure is that the team is maybe fairly small for such a large project, and the desktop app (a minority of their users) even more so. I’d be surprised if more than one or two coders is working on it, maybe even only in their spare time. Perhaps they just straight up don’t have the manpower.

From my research, it does seem that these issues do eventually get resolved after an absolutely insanely unreasonable length of time. On the other hand, it wouldn’t surprise me much if they phased out the desktop app either.

I have not seen any log here in this thread. (The devs like to have log files)
Maybe someone who has the problem could share their logs?
It may also be useful to add the mpv logs. To do so, add this
log-file="C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\Plex\log1-mpv.txt" (or any path you want) to your mpv.conf and try playing back a file.

(The issue is also somewhat weird, I have seen many users having this issue are running an Nvidia gpu, I have 3 pcs (win11) with an Nvidia gpu and none of them shows this one + Intel HD laptop that also works fine with the latest version of Plex for Desktop)

Oh my frickin’ God. Try restoring your GPU’s 3D Settings to Default.

@agentbinky, That actually worked. And I think I found the trouble setting as well. Running 1.46.1 it is now working properly. I do believe the trouble setting might be setting a Global Antialiasing - FXAA being set to ON. If you leave it at the default OFF Plex is working fine now, but if you set it to ON no video is played.

Also to note, Plex needs to be closed or restarted before the changes become effective. Now why Plex is caring about a forced FXAA, IDK.

I just tried resetting my nvidia 3D settings to default as agentbinky suggested, and boom it now works, after weeks of trying all manner of different things and reverting and reinstalling.
I also checked what Thymrnam mentions, the issue does indeed reappear when setting the Global Antialiasing FXAA to ā€˜on’

Doin’ people’s jobs for them. If I spoke my mind, I would again be ā€œModerated by the Community!ā€ XD

Fixed mine too, thanks very much!

Yore welcome.

Welp, guess I gotta wait around for a Lifetime deal again.

Just stumbled upon this issue tonight. I used the compatibility settings on the plex shortcut to ā€œDisable Full-Screen Optimizationsā€ fixed it right up
