Like so many other people I’ve had multiple issues with downloads on android.
Firstly, there’s the DNS binding issue over LAN, which is (probably) the cause of my downloads not working at all.
Workaround - I have to run a VPN on my mobile as i can’t try the various hacks suggested on my router (too locked down)
Secondly, transcoding rarely works.
Workaround - i bought a 1 TB micro SD card so I could download my music files in original (flac) quality.
Thirdly, having done the above and created a smart playlist for the music I want available offline, downloading said playlist works perfectly and quickly until hitting about 8 GB (which with flac is only around 400-500 files) at which point it grinds to a halt.
Workaround - I’ve discovered that once this limit is reached, killing the app (forced stop) and starting it again allows a few files to download before it freezes again. So I created a tasker sequence to automate this. It’s extremely slow and tedious and it’s stupid, but at least it works!
This download issue for ‘large’ playlists is a known problem and Plex have no intention of fixing it.
Whilst I’m at least content in the fact I have a workaround, albeit clunky and inefficient, I’m really hoping it will be sorted one day along with the other two issues.
I won’t go into why a ‘small’ playlist of tracks is not sufficient. The reasons seem to be obvious to everyone except Plex devs. Hence we’re also stuck with the 24hr limit on Plexamp, despite 100s of complaints and requests.
So please Plex devs. Fix this issue as well as the others.
