BUG: Exiting Plex does not shutdown properly

Server Version#: 1.13…9.5456
Player Version#:3.72.1
TV: Samsung QN65Q8FN
Software Version: T-KTM2AKUC-1153.1, BT - S
Firmware: 1153 (Latest)

The issue we are experiencing is that when you exit Plex with the “back” button from the main screen and select Exit it is not shutting down the Plex app properly. If you then turn off the TV for a period of time and come back to want to watch something else on plex. When you fire it up, there is a black error box that states “Network connection lost, Please check this Device’s network connection.”.

Our TV is not using Wireless so that isn’t the issue.

Now, if you go up to your account section in Plex and choose to exit this way, the App will close properly and this issue does not occur.

This is repeatable reliably.

This was also present in the previous version of the Plex app but was worse as you had to unplug your TV to get control of Plex and your TV again.

In the newest version of Plex you can at least control the Plex app and exit it from the account menu and remove that black box.

Here’s a picture of the box that I’m talking about.

What about if you exist using the exit button/long pressing the back button on the smart remote?

Initial results say that’s a good work around. Though the first test that error did pop up it went away.

I did not know about short vs long press options. It even seems to work our our Harmony remote.

Though that works, the exit feature of the app is still not closing down the app properly. I don’t know if it is a TV OS issue or Plex issue though.

Thanks for the bug report, I’ll log an internal issue.

The long press of back button on the new smart remote is the equivalent of the old exit button on the standard remote. It basically kills the app you are in.

nice!

Unfortunately it still shows that error message occasionally but at least I am able to control the app and do a “exit” from the menu. Not nearly as bad as the previous version where you had to power cycle the TV at the wall.

More daily use and this error box pops up no matter how the plex app is closed down. As mentioned at least now you can move around and close it down a second time to clear it.

I didn’t know about long pressing the back/return button as a way to exit Plex.

Thanks for this tip :+1:

it works on any app, not just plex

@sLumpy Just thought I’d check in to see if you guys have made any progress on tracking the issue down?

Same here on Samsung 2018 Q7FN with latest firmware and Plex app. No matter the exit method, the error appears and requires an exit and reload to get functional app.

We have not looked at this yet, we have an internal issue logged to track it though.

Does this happen for other apps like Netflix or Amazon Prime?

@sLumpy, I have not tried either but will do so this evening and report findings. I don’t have a Netflix account but do have an Amazon Prime one.

One thing to note is that after the latest update the Plex App is not completely locking the TV as it used to. You can at least navigate the menu to close it down. Then relaunch and it is 100% ok until you shutdown.

Previously the only way to recover was to unplug the TV from the wall.

I’m only getting this behavior with the latest Plex app. None of my other apps (Amazon video, Amazon music, Netflix, ESPN, etc.) get the “Connection lost” error that is subsequently cleared with hard exit and reload.

@sLumpy I also confirm other apps are not exhibiting this behavior.

Thanks. We’ll investigate.

@sLumpy Are you able to replicate the issue? Do you need any further information?

I have this issue aswell.
Will it be adressed in the upcoming update?

I have been unable to reproduce the issue. I’ll need some logs to see if there’s anything obvious going on:

  1. When you open the app, go to Settings -> Privacy and turn on “Log to Server”
  2. Reproduce the issue
  3. Go to the plex web app
  4. Settings -> Manage -> Troubleshooting
  5. Download Logs
  6. PM me the downloaded logs from above.

I am having the same issue. Please advise if you still need logs ?
