Samsung SmartTV - Plex blank screen

Server Version:1.14.1.5488
Player Version:3.90.2

Hi, I have noticed that there was an update today for the Plex app for Samsung SmartTV’s Tizen OS.

Unfortunately, it’s showing me the blank screen when opening the app. When the Plex server is shutdown, it correctly detects server being offline. However, when the server is online, I see only blank screen with Plex background, and nothing else.

I have tried restarting the TV and also reinstalling the app. Plex is working at every other device.

Many thanks for help!

Getting the same thing here with a Tizen 2016 Samsung UHD TV. TV firmware is up to date. Restarted Plex Server, updated it, restarted computer, restarted whole home network, uninstalled Plex app on TV, reinstalled, reset TV Smart Hub - all produce the same result: a quick error saying it can’t connnect to the Plex server then a blank screen with the Plex app wallpaper. Nothing else. Plex app on my iPhone works fine.

Seems to be related to the latest Plex app update for the TV which occurred today (14/03/2019).

Same behavior as described above since today’s patch.

Plex app on Tizen simply unusable, please perform a rollback.

Just updated to version 3.90.2 on my Samsung and it is working just fine.

It seems to be a bit snappier than the last version, and a quick test of a 4K video with AC3 audio indicates that it is direct playing with no transcoding.

I’m having the same issue on 3.90.2 Tizen 4.0 Samsung UN50NU710D

For me it’s working on a 2016 Tizen. I watched last evening two episodes of GoT and the subtitles didn’t force a transcoding. I’ll test some more but at least for now the subtitles bug seems fixed.

Same issue for me right after Plex was updated to version 3.90.2. Rebooting TV, reinstalling app, updating media library – nothing helped.

Try updating your PMS to the latest version and seeing if that helps with the issue. If that doesn’t help, please post logs

Had to manually download a PMS update (my ‘check for updates’ button was disabled), but doing a server update, + removing the Plex app from my Samsung and reinstalling it was what finally fixed it. Thanks.

edit: wanted to mention that this problem started very late 3/13 or very early 3/14. mostly black screen with javascript errors and obfuscated icons up top

…and we’re back to black tiles.

FWIW I had missing posters/black tiles as well, then the update hosed plex completely (the javascript errors up top). Updating PMS manually (my “check for updates”, so i downloaded the package from https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/) AND uninstalling/reinstalling the tizen app on the TV fixed everything, including getting the posters back.

I have the same issue as the OP. Updating to PMS 1.5.1 (and afterwards to 1.5.2) and reïnstalling the client app on TV did not work for me. Als tried fully rebooting TV and server.

Right before it goes to the blank Plex Background screen, I do get to see the rest of the GUI and an error about not finding my plex server for about a second.

Everything working on other devices.

Where would I be able to find the right logs and where do I need to post them?

I have tried the same thing as GoreKoala, and got the same result.

This may not work for you, but it did for me.
After upgrading to player 3.90.2 I also had the same problem as you. I looked through the pms settings and found my secure connection setting was set to ‘Required’ (Plex recommend it to be set to ‘Preferred’) after changing it to ‘Preferred’ and saving the settings all is now good. I also have to mention that up until this player version, I never had a problem with the secure connection setting being set as ‘Required’ But all good now anyway.

I don’t know what you people do to break it… for me it works fine… the new version seems snappier and faster…

Did the exact same steps as Gorekoala . No dice.

Missing posters and thumbs.
I am deleting and installing again n again just to get sign in code n only then it let’s me play anything. Getting annoyed because if I shut my TV. I have to delete install n sign in again. Otherwise same as Gorekoala.

Ruined my entire setup.
Previous version worked just fine. Why fix what isn’t broken. Sigh

I also had set this to “required” and changing it to “preferred” worked for me. Thanks for the suggestion. I can watch TV again!

I hope this gets fixed in the future as I prefer secured connections in general.

server and tv samsung 2016 updated to the last version working perfect except searching for items. then goes to blank screen. working fine with 3.8.4.1 preview

For those who have black screen after latest update 3.90.2, uninstall the app (delete), restart the TV and unplug/plug from ee, then clean reinstall app.
This should fix it.

For those who can’t delete the app cause it’s embedded, sorry!

Setting secure connection to preferred solved the issue for me! Many thanks! I can finally watch my movies without painstaking copying again!
