[BUG] latest plex beta font size!

Holy cow, what happened to the blow up “Continu watching” Recently added “ etc and so on.

Please change it back to original size! It’s huge compared to what it was. Totally messing up the whole layout.

Please consider people with normal eyesight ! Its pretty much unusable like this.

The photo doesn’t show how worse it is, just switch back to 9.90 latest stable. And size is back to normal! So yeah .. just why? Make a option for people with bad eyesight to toggle on or off. Don’t force it thru everyone’s throat like pretty much always…

This isn’t a bug, but an intentional design change. At this time, we don’t have any plans to change the text or make it smaller.

Thats a tough pill to swallow , it make Plex completely unusable and not enjoyable after version 9.90.**

Why not a toggle for people with bad eyesight to flip the switch for bigger size fonts etc and everyone could be happy. Like what is done with themes etc.

Also the letters are all jagged around the edges. (Might be android not rendering native 4K)

@DaveBinM Would you mind looking into an other bug for me? Just a heads up if it’s being worked on.

There won’t be any toggle on this, and I think it’s a bit of a stretch to call the app unusable when we change the size of some text. :man_shrugging: We just render it as text, rather than an image or anything, so any artefacts are really to do with the UI and scaling on the display. Android TV UIs are only rendered at 1080p (though I think that is changing in Android 12 or 13).

@DaveBinM For me it is( I respect your opinion about seeing it differently), so I am forced to stay on 9.90.** for as long as it keeps working. Correct 12-13 will have a native 4K UI might make things better. Appreciate you taking the time to explain.

Could you check something for me ?

I’ve been waiting to see if anyone else reported this. It jumped out to me last friday when the beta rolled out

The sections fonts sizes are too large on a TV screen, especially when compared to the plot summary and the rest of the UX. It’s okay on mobile (IMO) but not a large TV screen.

I can understand and get behind having the main title (3:10 to Yuma) in your screenshot this size but the rest (Continue Watching etc…) are just out of proportions with the rest of the UX. Its certainly not unusable but does look messy (IMO). Maybe between the font the main title uses and the plot summary would be better.

Anyhow, for what its worth feedback is given.

Thanks for you feedback! I am glad I am not the only one. Exact the size for the section fonts is a bit to large and looks misplaced.

What is also annoying (and frustrating) is when you have multiple devices. I have a roku in my daughters room and the design of its home screen is much cleaner in regard to fonts & sizes. Large(ish) size for the main title of the show or movie and then pretty much everything after that is uniform with the font and size. Nice, clean & simple.

This mix of sizes on the android tv app almost feels like, hey look folks, we can use different sizes in different places  I also wish the client dev teams worked together on a uniform single UX design. Anyhow, I live in hope !

All the TV clients do share a uniform design, however, due to when different apps are released, things will appear on different apps at slightly different times. However, all TV apps will be moving to the text sizes you’re seeing on Android TV.

The differences are subtle but widespread. Outside of the font changes being discussed here I’ll give two examples but I could give many many more …

  1. On android when your go to a TV episode the list of cast is scoped to guests in the episode. On the roku it’s scoped to show level cast with no guests.
  2. Using Ireland as an example, certifications on roku use the format of ie/12 while on android its just 12.

Not exactly uniform or consistent. Some would say minor and nitpicking but it’s so objious when you move from one device’s to another.

Have the teams take the apps on various devices and compare the differences.

I said that they use a uniform design, I didn’t say everything was 100% implemented or exact yet. There will also be bugs, and some discrepancies, but everything is working towards being the same.

What is the reason behind this font blow up? It would be better if it was a little more moderated ( size wise and in design with the whole UI), if my memory serves correctly complains about not readable always been taking more seriously, then people complains from people against .

Example, that ugly selection square that was forced upon the users ( at least it’s white right now”. Now this font thing :man_shrugging:t2:. What’s next ? Blowing up more text sections ? Please keep in mind not everyone is sitting 4+ meters away from their screen.

We’re always striving to improve the UI and experience within the app. While this isn’t a bug, it may still get refined, although there aren’t any plans to change it at this point in time. Personally, I really like the outline that shows what is focused. Previously, I personally found it hard to see at a glance which item had focus, and had to navigate in order to see where focus was (and I sit 3 metres from a 65" screen). While I understand you may not like it, it doesn’t mean other people feel the same way, and others will think this is a good improvement.

Any change to the UI will bring positive and negative comments, and while we can’t please everyone, we do our best to make the UI as friendly as possible to as many people as possible.

Appreciate the more in depth clarification on the subject. But yeah majority of design choices wouldn’t be my first choice. If you have a 65” tv and that close by… I can’t understand how font this big seems like a good idea . Sorry I just can’t understand haha. Let’s just agree to disagree each other. Anyways thanks Dave.

i hope in the future Plex change it but yeah :man_shrugging:t2:, likely not going to happen, even worse design choices will be brought up for sure. Who knows maybe a good alternative to plex pop ups in the near future.

Going to agree that the Roku has the better layout at the moment. Nice, clean and simple!

What the hell, are plex devs kinda blind or the end user is (those that complain about visibility)? Latest font size in new beta is completely blown up!

This is getting rediculous @anon5074910 whats your opinion.

Plex devs please stop blowing the font up any more, its at a point plex becomes visual useless. Maybe if you sitting far far away from your screen its useable. Perhaps devs should focus on more important stuff… like fixing browsing through a large library on Android for example.

With plex for android tv 9.11 if anything these section sizes have got even bigger over 9.10, they certainly feel that way. Yes, they look wonky and unfinished IMO but as Dave has said this is an intentional design change so for now we are the crazies and plex will march on regardless.

Plex are forever tinkering with the design. With these updates they have finally re-added the audio language identifier to the episode / movie title screen. This is a welcome return but have taken plex almost 2 years to re-add it since I reported it as removed → Roku: Return Audio Language Identifier to Plex UI

They’ve also recently messed with the unplayed / played indicators adding a nasty looking green tick and removed the unplayed one Unplayed watch status indicator change in Plex for Mobile Android 9.10.0.35838. They also changed the number notification to +99 replace the actual real unplayed number, all of which are a step backwards IMO.

So, what I’m sure of is that plex will continue to mess around with the UI with what they consider improvements, they get some right and get some wrong but we can be sure over time it’ll change again like the wind!

Ah I see… yeah you got that right . So many changes over the years. If you ask me it’s turning into a big piece of s… :man_shrugging:t2:.

As you mention we might be the crazies haha, i use plex on a daily basis and it’s my main source for content so yeah i get kinda fired up about these annoying changes. And if there was a decent alternative I would jump on it and have plex refunded me plex pass fee for sure.

Really looking forward to the day something better then plex is being developed. Emby isn’t there yet ( especially for android TV) and jellyfin has a long way to go. Kodi is too much of a hassle, Apple TV as a platform is again another box.

*edit not for being all salty , I was a happy user for many years. Gladly paid for plex pass lifetime on my old account until I lost acces.

BTW… Have you noticed the UI jump up and down on the episode title screen when scrolling ?

It’s caused by the episode summary changing length when you scroll. One line summary the UI render one way, two line summaries another and three lines yet another way. Started happening around the 9.10 update…

Yeah I did! I thought it was just me being to picky and stuff…

Maybe you should address this little bug to a dev yo get it fixt for the final version.

Btw it seems artwork is also slower loading in the top right corner.
