[BUG] Plex fails to see episode-level extras when multiple editions of episode exist

Server Version#: 1.31.0.6654
Smart TV Player Version#: 2.009
FireTV Player Version# 9.19.1.525 (336a502)
iOS Player Version# 8.12

I made a stab at trying to figure out which Plex clients can actually see/offer TV Show extras, at which levels, and through variation of naming conventions and storage locations.

This bug report stems from work started in my first post:
Season-specific extras not working
where I was instructed to pay attention to the rubric found on this page:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/local-files-for-tv-show-trailers-and-extras/

I was excited to discover that my Android phone’s Plex app actually picked up extras when saved via the Season-level extras folders (e.g., Season 01/Deleted Scenes/.). It turns out that my iOS app does, as well. Interestingly, though, episode-level extras (e.g., -deleted.*) are shown at the Season-level on both systems. I guess that’s also a bug because those don’t [also] show up at the Episode-level. That’s not why I initiated this post, though. Also odd is that Plex on Amazon FireTV devices doesn’t show any extras (except the trailers off the internet) - I would’ve thought that the Plex app would’ve been Android-based on that platform and performed similarly to my phone’s Plex app. If it is, perhaps that’s another bug?

The bug I intended to report is that if an Episode-level extra is provided, it isn’t seen (or is seen and forgotten) when multiple editions of an episode exist. In the example:

Season 01/Show S01 E01 - Pilot {edition-Broadcast}.ext
Season 01/Show S01 E01 - Pilot {edition-Unaired}.ext
Season 01/Show S01 E01 - Pilot-deleted.ext

the deleted scene will not be noticed, or at least, not be shown by the client. ‘Play Version’ works (though, it still doesn’t provide any way to discern which option is which). I was able to verify the bug on a Smart TV whose Plex app could see Episode-level extras for singular episodes but not for episodes with multiple versions. It seems like either the scanner or the client display gets distracted by the multiple editions/versions and forgets to consider the adjacent extras.

I did see this forum article, which points out that editions are only supported in Movies.
Using Editions for TV Episodes?

This isn’t strictly true on two counts:

  1. If the scanner wasn’t looking for and interpreting all or part of the {edition} tag, it wouldn’t have gotten hung up on it and would’ve seen the inline deleted scenes files.
  2. For all of the TV Series in which I have multiple editions of an episode defined, every single one of them are playable via the “Play Version” option on all clients.

Perhaps these bugs/clues will help bolster Extras support in TV Shows at all levels (Series, Season, Episode) for all Plex clients…

Thanks!

Bump, to combat 3-month time-out.

There is no edition support for tv shows in Plex. That only works for movies.

As a result, your extra is not named identically to the episode, therefore it is not recognized as an episode-level extra at all.

Please add full edition (or version) support for series. There are countless cases of multiple variations of episodes out there (more than there are for movies, I bet!). Per note #2 in my original post, series handling already provides a significant level of support for editions (it’s almost completely supported, even if not intentional) - why not complete support?
